That's crazy if that's the case. The LEDs are probably more visible and the standard ones are only orange when the indicator is on, otherwise they're red with a strip of white.

And those amber reflectors at the front of US spec cars are hideous - as much as we can complain about ADRs it's good they haven't penalised us with that requirement as well

      • Without veering off topic too much, the E type Jag and the MG B were both ruined when adapted for the US market design rules. Just look at the bumpers on the MG pre (petite chrome) and post US (vast black rubber).
        Looking for:- RS4 B7 Avant.
Current:- Amarok V6 Sportline; Mazda CX-9 Azami AWD

US tail lights are slightly different (but they don't have solid amber reflectors - that's the front only), but that's not the reason why they don't fit LEDs as standard - LEDs are available and have been in previous versions. The reason is that US-delivered VWs are often of a lower spec than we get here, because of the substantially lower prices paid for new vehicles in the US. The per-unit profit on a car in the states is much lower than in Australia and Europe, and as a result manufacturers will often cut costs in minor areas in order to claw back some profit.

In Australia, we generally get a higher-than-average standard spec because of the prices paid (and profits made) here. The consumer has higher expectations.

                • That American guy in those two R reviews is really annoying. He's obsessed with the DSG and keeps talking over the quietly spoken VW guy who is the one you want to hear from

                          • Had my first real drive today after picking it up from the dealer and driving across town. Spent most of my time working out the controls and playing with everything. Eventually tried a decent run in Race mode - I think I said 'Holy F***' out loud! I'm coming from a Stage 2+ Lancer Ralliart which is quicker than a standard Evo X, but the Golf certainly feels quicker again. I'll put it down to being lighter. Just wish the gearbox didn't automatically go back to auto mode unless i want it to - I was often manually putting it in 6th in Race mode, only to have the car drop back to 4th after 20 seconds. I just re-read the manual and found out I can switch between D and S just by pulling the gear shifter down, so I'll have to play more tomorrow.

                            • Or just by moving the gear stick to the left when your in the drive selection

                              • Having to move the shift selector kind of removes the whole point of having paddles... The Ralliart just assumes you used the paddles, so you must want tiptronic mode. I should have bought the manual - then I get to make all the decisions! But if there is a VCSD(sp?) code to turn off the automatic return to idiot mode, I love to know.
