By all means, have custom factory options and the corresponding 9 month deliveries. But a nicely spec-ed variant for, say the GTI, that you can drive off the factory floor would be nice.

Yes that would be a good idea. By now VW Australia would have reasonably good statistics on what options are most commonly ordered, and maybe package a few different combo's together and give them a badge.

Apart from fixing reliability issues and fixing squeaks/rattles etc, I think the GTI as is with 155kw and 17" rims is slightly under done, I would like to see a stage 1 model available from VW to avoid the warranty issues that arise from stage 1 mods. Something like the 35ED as a standard production model maybe.

I agree 100%. 155kw is a little under done for a GTI. 190kw and 400nm with a strong 6speed DSG, all out of the box would be nice. But alas, we won't get it.

The problem with giving the GTI higher power/torque numbers is that the R needs to be higher again.

Maybe, but 4motion, uprated suspension, wheels and interior - AND PRICED ACCORDINGLY, would be enough IMHO

They will, I expect. But I have strong doubts we'll ever see them in Australia. Which makes me a sad bunny.

Maybe we should hang on to our Mk5, one of the first officially imported 3dr GTIs in the country, for old time's sake.

Just in case people have missed this from the Drive article on the GTI and R:

In 2013, Volkswagen plans to unleash replacements for the sixth-generation Golf GTi and third-generation Golf R. With front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive respectively, both forgo their current turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol powerplants for more contemporary units of the same capacity developed in partnership with Audi. In the new GTi, which is set to be previewed in concept car form at the Paris motor show later this month, it is claimed to produce 168kW, with the R receiving a more heavily tuned version of the new aluminium block mill delivering a gutsy 209kW.
Drive - 2013 Volkswagen Golf Details

And the GTD will be a whopping 134kw

Dunno about dropping the GTI engine part, this engine (EA88 is different to the engine in the R (EA113) which should be the one that's being dropped.

The GTI needs standard Xenon's and 18" wheels. I'd be happy for the rest to remain as options.

Having seen the standard and the optional features available on the
regular golf, I think bi xenon lights, 18" wheels, adaptive cchassis
control, reversing camera and electric seats should be standard on the GTI .
Leather seats, satnav/high end touch screen, adaptive cruise control and so on can all be optional for a (TOKEN). I wish!
