Yes I would say that a 77TSI Vs an R would be justified as there is that quantum leap, but when the GTI out of the box is so damn good, it is hard to get the same leap again from cars 2-3 times more. From a price point, 70-75k max would suffice for a Golf RS, or else it enters the territory of BMW 135i/328i, Audi S3 etc which most people would probably opt for due to the badge.
These types of comments dont hold water and dont serve this thread well. By your account, someone could use the same argument by saying that a Golf GTi is not 2/3 times better than a Polo GTi, so they may as well stick to the Polo. Without disrespecting anyones status, you buy what you can afford, and everyone aspires to afford the best they can. Whether you like it or not, the R is at the top of the Golf tree for a reason, its better. This is the same reason BMW M3 buyers buy that car over a BMW 335, because they can and its better. If I owned a 335, I wouldnt be saying the M3 is crap because it's only 0.4 second faster 0-100 or whatever, it's the overall driving experience you get from selecting the car at the top of a modle line.

Hope I havn't offended anyones sensibilities by saying this, but I think it was about time it was said.

no disrespect WHATSOEVER to those guys who i respect and like, or to anyone who has purchased an .:R, however, i think you've yet to come to understand the brand/ model intentions/ what it's all about, in general.

all this crap about "one gajillion dollars buys so much more potential...".... get some.. ehem... , then take your little polo diesel to a drive meet that has cars like R33 GTR, R34 GTT, E46 M3, Porche 911, cayman S etc, like i did - people smirking at you in the parking lot.

you'll find that price point dont mean sh7t when it comes to a car's ability on touge, and neither will 598,00BHP on the next golf RS - power corrupts, and touge, where most of us enthusiasts spend their weekends (no, we dont all go to the track twice a week), is the true test of a car's abilities.

p.s. i mean no disrespect in my own post, but some people are so hell bent on "well i paid $14k more than the next guy who only got a GTI, so my car must be more capable"... i cannot accept that view, because i know better. and so do quite a few other "more capable-as-per-price-point" cars....

        • I think the point is who cares?

GTI is a good car. R is a good car. 118tsi is a good car.

You don't need to justify anything to anyone.

                The mk7 isn't out here............
It won't appear in the Aus market until around 2014 which will give the Mk6 a 5 year life, on top of the mk5's life (5 years) this means there is a 10 year cycle between major updates.

                • So true team v, was speaking with manager at Vw gold coast 2mths ago and he also stated that Vw changes there shape every 6 yrs, so all ppl should just chill until 2014/15 before we see the mk7 @ the motor show

                  • Mk6 was built over the Mk5 framework, some called it a Mk5.5. Mk7 will be on that new MQB platform and should be lighter, and have more tech.
Some say he was the Stig... all we know is that he drives a VW Transporter.

Where did you get 2014 from? Do you think they will wait a whole 12 months from its (any Golf Mk7 variant) release in Europe before shipping it here?

Look at mid 2013 for the Mk7 (non-GTi/R etc) for its landing in Australia.

It won't be released in Europe until the 2013 motorshow's which puts it's arrival in the Aus market at early 2014 as per all the previous VW models.......

It is usual practice that the "press release" will be 9 months after the Euro release with a bunch of dealer models only, if you want a custom order it will be 2014.

I concur, the same went for the Range Rover Evoque. Saw a few around in February/March and in dealers. But when we enquired about getting a built to our spec one it was going to be around 14-16months before it got here. 2-3 of those months were because of high-demand but otherwise it was as you said.

Also when it gets shown at a motorshow, it can still be several months or even a year for it to become available to the public.
