    • Official Release Date?

      Hey All,

Has there been an official local release date of the MK7 GTI?

      Cheers,

Was at Barlowworld VW in Glen Waverley yesterday and they said late June. Not really sure if they're having me on or not. That's for the base models too, no date in site for the GTI.

Considering the current VW sale on all Golf models ends March 31 then a 2nd quarter release for the normal spec Golfs would be likely.

                • Nice, although the Golf R is just using normal Golf body panels for now it seems.

Big question is do I upgrade.. and if yes... into what? GTI or push for an R? Can I wait that long?
Some say he was the Stig... all we know is that he drives a VW Transporter.

The commentary calls it a prototype.. I'm guessing they've opened up the front grill for additional cooling - I'd assume they'd give the final car a finish similar to the current R to differentiate it from the GTI.

Out back surely they'll centre the exhaust pipes again as well..

I have the same issue, although given the similarity in looks I'm thinking of the various mods I could do on my current ride for less than half the cost of the eventual change-over into just a GTI.. and that seems to be a better course for me to take.

(I also need to keep in mind the hopeful addition to the family in the next 12-18 months .. no doubt a bigger drain on funds than cars!)

                        • They look really good. Definitely an evolution in design rather than a revolution - but I'm fine with that. It's basically the styling of a Mk6, with the edginess of the Passat, which is also very nice. Even the wagon looks okay in the Mk7.

I'm assuming that the R in those photo's is still a mule, because it's way too sedate. Although the 7 speed wet DSG sounds like a good prospect.

It's an engineering prototype; definitely not indicative of the final product styling-wise. Although there has been some speculation that the R will lose the twin centre-mounted exhausts in the Mk7.

That article quotes 290ps, or 213kw. Not bad.

I can only see the main pic where you can pretty much only see the GTI

I think they are talking about the white coloured one in the background. That one looks like the upcoming Polo R to me rather than the Golf R, judging from the size and headlights.
