Mk7 Golf Suspension Noises

Hi brains trust,

I have a 2017 Mk7 Golf 92TSI w/ 242k on the clock that has some strange noises coming from the front left corner. Happens when turning left, as well as when going over speed humps and angulations in general (see video attached).

Taken to 2 mechanics: first could not pinpoint and wanted to pull the whole corner apart at great expense, and the other "sprayed the **** out the bushes with silicon spray"...

The general creaking is, I am assuming, the sway bar bushes, which I am lead to believe the bushes and unit are a complete unit, so need replacing. But the noise when turning left has be stumped.

Hi and welcome to the forum. Your video shows you turning the wheel but the car appears to be stationary. I can hear a noise in the video - it may be steering rack related seeing the car is stationary?

When the car is moving, if you are getting creaking noises when going over bumps and into driveways etc then there is a pretty good chance it will be your strut bearings which are located at the top of the coil spring on each side of the front suspension. These are well known to wear out and then cause creaking noises - I had to replace the ones in my Mk7 GTI at 50,000km due to noises. This required removal of each front strut to remove and replace - totally DIY'able if you have the know how and tools. You'll need 2x of these: SACHS Strut Bearing '-' VW Golf Mk7 GTI/R & Audi 8V A3/S3 | AutoInstruct

At 240,xxxkm and not knowing what suspension related parts you might have already had replaced due to wear and tear, you might want to have all of the suspension looked over by a VW specialist including - sway bar end links, lower control arm bushes, strut tops and strut bearings, sway bar bushes on the crossmember.

Yes, I’d guess strut top bearing given you are stationary.
On another car with inverted Bilsteins I got a creaky noise when turning and at low speeds but it was actually well known to be the sliding bush at the top of the strut up under the dust cover. Dry silicone lube regularly shut them up, but a well known problem with the Liberty GT struts.
Ive had a bit of creak from the front right occasionally (2019 R wag), I tried some silicone spray on the sway bar mounting bush and it’s gone much more quiet, mentioned it at service today and asked mechs to spray both and we’ll see how it goes.

Hey Lucas. Thanks for replying.
Makes the same noise when it’s driving too.
Only happens when turning left from centre (straight ahead).
New shocks were installed a few months back. That’s all I’m aware of that’s new.

It’s more of a rubbing noise when turning left from centre position.
The creaks are probably more the sway bar. Cheers for reply.

There are many things it could be - track rod ends, ball joints, sway bar end links etc etc. With 240,000km im sure all those parts are well past their prime. Could even be a failing electronic power steering rack (although I would like to think you would feel some odd feedback through the steering wheel).

Id recommend booking in to VTune to get it checked over. They are just near you in Tullamarine: VTUNE Performance

Yes they do tuning and modifications, but also do a lot of log book servicing and general mainternance stuff. Just thought they would be a good option as they know the Golf platform very well and are only a few mins drive away.
