  • New tyre time for MY16 GTI

Hey there. Just starting to look for new tyres for my 2016 GTI.

Currently have the stock Bridgestones (can’t remember the model) in 225/40/R18.

I’ve been recommended these thus far…
    Michelin PILOT SPORT 5 225/40ZR18 92Y | 225/40R18 Tyres for sale

    Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5 225/40R18 92Y | 225/40R18 Tyres for sale

Not for track work. Just hoping for a good balance of control & longevity.

    Any others you recommend?

My pref would be the michelin's from the two you've mentioned. Really is a bit hard to go wrong with them. That being said, we have this model tyre on my wifes A4 (replaced original Continental SportContact 6) and they grip like a thong on hot tar. These are (IMO) every bit as good as the continental, which in themselves are an amazing tyre.

The Michelin PS5 and Bridgestone Potenza Sport are pretty much the best of the best in terms of a sporty road tyre. You cant go wrong with either of them.

In saying that, you can get away perfectly fine with something not quite as expensive, such as Hankook Ventus S1 evo3 K127 Tyres from $259 | JAX Tyres & Auto 1300 367 897 which is what I have on my Mk7 GTI and they perform really well (both in tests and in real life). Currently $886 for 4 tyres until the end of Jan.

Hmm I wonder if these are the ones currently on my MK7?? I remember seeing Potenza on them, but I could be confusing them for another Golf.. need to check when I get home.

Bob Jane have got a sale on the Michelins for $289 fyi.

Thanks. Something to consider. Good deal including fitting. I’ll need to weigh up all costs - labour, alignment etc.

I'd bet pounds to peanuts that the tyres you currently have are RE003 "Adrenalin". Comparing chalk and cheese. The Potenza Sport is in a different league. And at the currently price ($295 ea, buy 3 get one free)...comes out at under $900.

Check out some of the reviews at places like Auto Bild (Continental SportContact 6 Test, Review & Ratings of the Continental Sport Contact 6 | AllTyreTests.com)

Yeah you probably have Potenza RE003. The Potenza Sport are the best ones in the range, whereas the RE003 are mid spec.

The Potenza Sport's are also quite new to market.

Just checked….they’re the Potenza “S001”. How do they stack up against the competition? They’re the only ones I’ve used, so I can’t compare.

So the Potenza S001 has recently been replaced by the Potenza Sport. Nothing wrong with the S001 but they are just an older tyre now and you might struggle to find them again seeing they are no longer being manufactured.

Wow, why did @Lucas_R edit appear in my post instead of his???

“So the Potenza S001 has recently been replaced by the Potenza Sport. Nothing wrong with the S001 but they are just an older tyre now and you might struggle to find them again seeing they are no longer being manufactured.”

That’s so strange. I thought my account was hacked!

Anyway, I can still find the S001 tyres & they’re more expensive than the Pilot Sport 5 & many other highly rated newer tyres!

But I’ve kind of settled on the Pilot Sport 5 & will be shopping around tomorrow for total costs involved.

                Thanks for your help, people

I have s001’s on my T-roc. IMO they’re not as grippy as the Potenza Sports on my wife’s A4. Decent tyre, don’t get me wrong, but not in the same league…. That being said, the A4 is a mor stable platform than the t-roc too…

I don’t reckon you’ll be at all disappointed in the Michelins. The 4’s are incredible on my sons Polo GTi. The 5’s will be next level good.

I think that’s half the problem with quality tyres these days You buy a good brand, high range performance tyre, you’re pretty much assured excellent behaviour, decent noise levels, reasonable life…. It gets to the stage of splitting hairs .

Just noticed they’re down to $249 now on Tyroola!

                        Edit…
Found them for $245 including fitting & balancing at Tempetyres, so got my local Bob Jane to match that & the $70 Alignment, so $1050 all up. Can’t get them done until next week though, so I’ll tread carefully on these balding Bridgestones until then!

Had the Michelin Pilot Sport 5 for a couple of weeks now. I like em! As advertised, they’re a very comfortable ride (noticed riding over speed humps were like putting the car in ‘Comfort’ driving mode) & grippy around the bends. Hope they also live up to the longevity claims by Michelin, but so far, so good!
