  • Aggressive Engine Knocking Noise MK7 TDI

    Hi all,

Long story: I’ve called multiple mechanical places to take my car in to diagnose and sort out but there’s no availability until 2-3 weeks later. I even called up dealerships for help but there’s no availability.

This noise occurred midway through driving. It happened in correlation to acceleration. There would be irregular knocking and the engine would shake violently (this violent shaking occurred just after I stopped recording as I went to halt the engine). It sounded like my engine just failed.

    Car details:
    - 70,000kms
    - Always serviced
    - I don’t drive enthusiastically

I’m getting DMF, harmonic balancer pulley, piston knocking, etc from different sources. So far, it’s completely stopped! I started the engine and heard a big metal clunk beforehand and it left. This is now an intermittent issue but if someone has a clue with any common issues in this MQB platform, be my guest!

Short story: Massive knocking noise during drive. Sounded like something stuck in a radiator fan at first but progressed to irregular knocking. Started the car up 3 times and problem left.

Could it be as simple as a failed pendulum (dogbone) engine mount? There is an engine mount underneath the engine/transmission that looks like a bone (hence the nickname dogbone) which limits how much the engine rocks back and forth during load. It is possible that this mount has worn out/broken and is causing the engine to move more than it should.

Hey man, I plan to drive it very carefully to VW Centre in Newcastle. I wish it was a dogbone mount but you should’ve seen the irregular shaking. It was violent.
