5 year/unlimited warranty on new VW's sold to end of 2018

Looks like VW Oz are getting concerned about losing sales due to competing brands having longer warranty coverage. Obviously a bit of a toe in the water exercise seeing as it ends Dec 2018. I guess if it doesn't translate into increased sales then they may revert back to 3 years.

Of course they need to have cars they can actually deliver before anyone can get the benefit of this extended warranty - I assume the new WLTP requirements are still holding up all new VWs built in Europe ( I know the POMS have been whinging extensively about the delays in build and delivery on new Golf Rs).

This news alone is something I am using to consider whether to replace my 103TSI MY14 Highline with some R goodness and I would never consider a new vehicle without it.

But, to be fair, the price delta of a new car would exceed that of a complete replacement of my car like-for-like secondhand, so there's that...

Certainly the 5/10 years warranty didn’t save Mitsubishi and it didn’t catapult them to number 1 car manufacturer. Just like Daewoo free servicing didn’t do much for Daewoo in Australia. It only attracts customers who want only everything cheap. So far the Kia has the longest warranty there, 7 years unlimited km. The warranty is for the faults and the defects during the manufacture process, it doesn’t cover the faults that are caused by wear and tear, so it’s relatively safe for the manufacturers to offer. Only they will have to explain it to bit by bit to some bogans who thought that they’re buying onto 7 years trouble free motoring.

Longer term the market probably will end up at five years, but I suspect it's more of a marketing tool.

Per Transporter the extension generally appeals to non-car people looking for the cheapest deal. I'd hazard a guess that a fair chunk of VW buyers don't fit that mould - they'd go and buy the Kia (which is fine, for what it is at the price point it makes perfect sense for those buyers).

Would it sway me in my decision? Not at all. Doesn't mean I wouldn't like it there, but I'm not going to NOT buy a Golf R because it only has a three year warranty. And if you're bringing price delta into a car choice then..

This reminds me of Holden's limited time 7 year warranty, although they were really desperate to shift cars. VW I don't think are that desperate, especially when they are so ridged with pricing. -.-

I would like VW to come forward though and match Skoda with a 5, or even 6y like VW USA.

I'm like Dutch though. I bought the GTI because I wanted the GTI. When it's time to upgrade it'll likely be another GTI, R, Alltrack or possibly one of those 10 year warranty Kia Stingers :p

Helping a mate buy a VW now, looking at demo's.

One has remainder of the 3 year warranty, the other has the 2 year extension. There is a price difference between the cars (Golf Alltrack), but trying to figure out that gap against the cost of a warranty extension.

So, in a roundabout way I'm asking, what's a ballpark value for the extra 2 year warranty VW are providing? I can't remember how much extra they wanted for the extension when I bought my Tiguan.

As it's a full VW warranty (and not the insurance crap the dealers often push) it arguably could be worth ~ $2k.

On the other hand, if nothing goes bang then it's worth nil.

In reality the real figure in bargaining may lie between the two?

I paid $1300 for my vw extended warranty ( for golf).
