Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

No rain over night so roads were much drier this morning and was able to get a better feeling for the new power, but still had to take it easy as not much space in city to put foot down.

Sounds like you need to take it for a spin up the old pacific highway this weekend (between Hornsby and Gosford)

I have been looking at wheels. Does anyone know the largest width and offset I can go without modification to guards or spacers?

Depends what look you're trying to achieve, and whether you're lowering or not.

Generally on the Mk7s the go-to size is around the x 8.5 ET45 mark, which fills the guards without causing headaches. Once you start playing outside that (wider/lower offset) you'll then need to look at mods. But then you'll also start to potentially add weight unless spending big bucks, so undoing some of the performance you've just added.

So 18x8.5 with that offset will fit under the standard guards? I am not planning on lowering at this point, maybe down the track.

Yes there shouldn't be an issue at stock height.

I can't remember if the Mk7-7.5s still run the front fender screw (just google it here or elsewhere) but if they do you may just need to pop it out to avoid rub on hard/cambered corners at speed. It's a quick fix.

I ran a more conservative fitment on my Mk7 GTI at 18 x 8 ET48, so definitely no rub but some would say the wheels were a touch tucked in. The x 8.5 ET45 will be +17.7mm in poke, and 7.7mm closer in to the suspension strut.

Looks like jaxtyres still has a picture of my old car up on the web.

Awesome, thanks for the advice will see what I wanna do, but still think stage 2 TCU tune is more worthwhile for now.

                    No problems.

Just remember, you can only use that performance a few % of the time, but with wheels you can look good 100% of the time.

Sounds good; should be a blast.

The wheels can wait, a short while.

As I am not good with wheels, if I want to stick with stockies for a while, what are the best tyres I can get to handle to extra power? It has been wet since I got my tune, but even the other day when the road was semi-dry I can't get any traction even in third if I put my foot down.

I usually defer to the tyre experts here; brad usually can chip in with some ideas.

What tyres are on there at the moment?
                              How worn are they?
                              What pressures are you running?

I'm assuming your wheels are 18x7.5? If so, you are restricted in tyre size (can't go wider than 225/40r1.

Unfortunately, a lot of it now comes down to driver technique and calibrating the right foot. My car looses traction in 3rd gear on a wet road too - you just have to drive according to conditions.

The car has 1000kms on it, so they tyres are basically brand new and not sure of the pressure, but even in the dry before the tune I couldnt keep traction in first so now its just worse, understandably I have to put foot down gradually when going from first but just thought if I get really good tyres even 225s they might help. Bridgestone Potenza RE003s?
