Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Ebay UU headlight fault, HID on stock halogen GTI

    Hi all

    GTI my15

The GTI is now out of warranty , so i want to do some mods

The first mod was to upgrade the halogen headlights with ebay UU headlights

I bought them on ebay from uk (advertised as being for halogen VW equiped cars)

these came with HID globes , ignitors, ballasts, preinstalled

I installed the headlights and for about a week everything was fine, no error codes, performed well (no blinding of others . proper cut off on beam height). ...

    then my problem

Left (headlight) indicator remained on , even with key off and locked. Indicator on headlight only at fault.

Throws an error in the Headunit when I use left indicator ( clears after cycling ignition)

other left indicators work as normal (mirror and rear indicators) headlight indicator on solid all the time.

I have checked all fuses cannot find anything blown. Engine bay and behind glovebox all ok.

All my search on the web point to the Body control module. Earlier MK6 MK5 point to a relay on the board as faulty, or a dry solder joint. After further research i now understand MK7 have a different architecture . so before i start pulling things apart ( i have found the BCM behind the glovebox)

I have plugged the genuine halogens headlights back in (to see if ebay headlights are to blame ) and same problem, left headlight indicator (stuck) on.

I could take back to VW dealer, pay for a new BCM (if that is the problem), but i want to sort the problem myself, and they probably will say headlight issue, or will refuse to do it as after market.

I can get a second hand module from the states, i now understand there are low line and high line BCM (i believe to do with the HID)

    .... so ...
Any ideas ? will a change through vag-com entry fix the issue, or is the BCM already "blown"

Before i starting looking further, maybe someone already knows of the fix, or suggest where to next

    Thanks

    Brian

Brian: first, before you spend any more money - get more information about the problem. For example, get hold of a diagnostic device (VCDS, or OBD11, or other) and read the error message that most likely will be present in the BCM relating to the fault. The newer stye modules in the mk7 (yes, they are very differen't to the mk5/mk6) are more informative - so use the data that's available in the car. It may save you lots of wasted time and expense chasing the wrong solution.

    Don

PS: don't bother chasing fuses of the exterior lights on a mk7 - they don't have the traditional arrangement of fusing each lamp. Lamp protection on a mk7 is managed directly by the BCM

      Thanks Don for answering,

i have been reading a lot of your posts, and i was hoping you would read and answer.

It was one of you posts that bought me to this forum, i have also read some of your posts on ross tech

Yes pulling a fuse does have a strange outcome with what is affected. I now understand why there is no fuse labeling on the car or the owners manual as to what the fuse does.
I have found the fuse that cuts the power to the left indicator (also partially cuts SOME of the right headlight). I just pull that at night time to keep the battery full, and not overheat the light.
I know the MK7 will cut all power when the battery gets too low, very clever.

I will take your advice and do a scan for error codes, this is a great idea.

In your opinion, what is the better diagnostic tool? I am ok with spending a couple of hundred dollars to get a good tool. I have seen that in the end they are onlyreading and writing code to the modules

I also own a my12/13 Jetta TDI, so i will use it on that as well

I am a windows software programmer, so i am not afraid of code (i realise it will be a steep learning curve, and my background might mean nothing in this instance, just thought i would mention it )

      Thanks

Brian: Many thanks for your kind words, but I too am just like every other forum member here- trying to learn from my fellow colleagues.

So - as I have already said, the individual lamps are protected generally by the BCM and in particular by the circuitry that is controlled by the Leuchte-sets for each of the 35 external lights on a mk7. Hence the wiring diagrams for a mk7 are absent the traditional in-line fuse for each lamp

I'm not sure what fuse you are pulling, but I suspect that it controls the power circuits for the left-side headlight fitting - thereby affecting a number of lamps (including the turn-signal). Incidentally, there is a fuse labeling diagram for the mk7 (google it to get a copy)

As to your question about which is the better diagnostic tool - I use VCDS, OBD11 and VCP. After a few years experience with these cables/dongles, my personal view is that each has its advantages and disadvantages. Sorry if you view my response as a cop-out, but it's my opinion that the right tool depends on how a prospective purchaser values the particular features of each cable and what their likely use will be over the short to medium term. A number of forum colleagues have debated this question HERE. This thread is ostensibly about OBD11, but if your read all the pages, you will read the debate about each of the competing cables.

Not sure how much advantage your programming background will be to OBD protocols - but your code-cutting skills will certainly be useful in your understanding of digital numbering systems- a very good start point indeed!!

Good luck and remember to try to make a few early errors - it's by far the best learning vehicle!

Thanks again for the detailed reply

I read your post on the odbeleven . I have been looking at the different tools for a couple of months now
I have been looking at the various options, the web is wonderful and overloaded with info at the same time
The humble mechanic on youtube gives VCDS a great rap as well

While the genuine cable is much more expensive I will purchase a genuine VCDS Vag-com hex v2 (3 vin) from ross-tech agent in australia . the ebay ones appear to be running the Lite version, and of doubtful quality $58 and i am not that keen on supporting pirates

(ignore the circled fuses in the image, i just found the image on the web, to cold outside at the moment to take a picture of my fuse box)

i have pulled the right green fuse, 40 amp (tallest in the image), this is the left headlight
The left green 40 amp is for the right headlight.

I went old school, started with the high amp fuses first, removing until the lights where off.

          Regards
          Brian

^^^ as I said, the 2 x fuses are the supply points for the left/right headlight fittings

I have the cable and have run a scan

Here is the first entry for the fault
                  ================================
5127 - Bulb for Front Left Turn Signal
                  B11E8 11 [009] - Short to Ground
Confirmed - Tested Since Memory Clear
                  Freeze Frame:
                  Fault Status: 00000001
                  Fault Priority: 2
                  Fault Frequency: 3
                  Reset counter: 177
                  Mileage: 52800 km
                  Date: 2018.06.04
                  Time: 06:43:45

                  --------------------------------------------------

Short to ground .. But the turn indicator is on all the time .. if i plug in the stock headlight, same behaviour , indicator on.

I have not cleared any codes yet, and i dont want to clear all fault codes, just the fault codes to do with the headlight.

I am thinking the next step is to clear the code on the headlight, plug in the stock headlight and see if the fault comes back. My logic is this will indentify the root cause. Headlight, or something worse

                  Any ideas?

I can post the full scan file if required

                  Thanks again

                        From ross-tech help ...

Keep in mind that many control modules are not aware of the actual date and time, so they may display bogus dates,

left blinker always on , seems your BCM burnt. Those UU light you bought from ebay seems not genius original VW parts. Original UU light need to change MQB-High BCM and install LWR control module partno: 7P6 907 357 D, add CAN wire, KL15 power to AFS Module, plug change, code & adaption 09,55 something else.

I think you need to buy a new or used BCM replace your burnt. this action also need ODIS and online GEKO account to deactive anti-thief component protection .
