Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Got two kayaks which have been travelling via the Tiguan, but we need more flexibility so am going to get a set for the Golf.

I’ve never had a car with roof rack mounting straight onto the body, and these Rhinos look like metal clamps grip straight under the door frame. I’m worried it will scratch the paint.

Anyone got racks they can recommend, or specific experience of this Rhino model?

    Cheers

I have the Vw racks that do the exact same thing. There’s a good chance of chipping the paint if you’re not extremely careful. The front rail has a locating pin and that’s the biggest culprit.

They tighten to 4nm and aren’t going anywhere when they are on.

The only other thing I always do is make sure the car is clean before I fit them and wipe down the brackets to stop any dirt from being squashed into the paint.

Clean the area the pad sits before installation, and remove regularly to clean underneath.

In areas where you are particularly concerned about scratches or chips, buy some anti-scratch film and install.

Realistically though, taking SOME care will result in your result being better than probably 90% of the people who use roof racks. Many out there simply don't care and end up with scratches, dents etc.
      Cheers

Thanks guys. Will order and add a thin plastic film between metal contact points

I used the Whispbar on my skoda wagon and would recommend them. Great rack and had next to no wind noise!
