Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • EPC warning light

Parked for 2 hours came back started drove off then seconds later engine warning light and EPC warning light came on. Seemed to lose power and engine would rev up but car would not respond. Engine light went off but EPC stayed on. Had to drive slowly to get home. It felt like each time I tried to accelerate the clutch was spinning free. Quite worried. What could be wrong?

Diagnosed as a faulty coil over one of the cylinders; $380 not bad. Could have been worse.

              EPC warning light

Unusual symptoms you described for a dead ignition coil. I would not have suggested ignition coils from your info.

$380 is damn expensive for 1x coil - you can buy 4 for $150. If one has died the others will follow, best buy the 4 and keep them handy.

Maybe the engine management system took over when it detected the fault?
VW charge $100 for the coil.
Thanks for the link. I may buy that set of 4. Are they easy to fit?

                  EPC warning light

Easy to fit and I've got 8 for sale, but not the R8 ones. They are just stock ones from a mk6 GTI.

I experienced this scenario yesterday, EPC and engine light came on.
Though mine behaved slightly different. I have a 2010 Golf GTI and it had been parked most of the day.
Started fine as I left my nephews house, had driven maybe 5k's, popped it back a gear to overtake.....Whammo!
The engine started to miss, like it had dropped a cylinder or plug. Very sluggish, like little to no pick up.
I immediately noticed both warning lights flashing and pulled up as soon as it was safe to do so.
Quick phone call to VW service and the guy says, "sounds like you've lost a coil pack"......
Did a quick engine check while on the phone to see if she was loosing water or oil, all good there.
Engine temp for oil and water were as "normal".
Quoted over the phone to replace the full set @ $500 including check??
It's booked in for next Monday, thankfully I do NOT have to drive anywhere until then. LOL

That's more like the kind of description to diagnose a faulty coil pack. Save yourself $300 and buy them direct from the link i put a post or two above.

Cheers Lucas. Yeah, I would've used your link but kinda needed them quickly.
I know online is pretty much the way things are now, but I still like the thought of local shops carrying most parts a guy could need....sadly, not always the case.
I mean, to wait until next Monday would've done, but I need to use my car on Saturday.
Anyway, after half a dozen phone calls to various part outlets, I got a set (or will have tomorrow) for $280
One supplier quoted $540............more expensive than OEM. lol
Still, 280 is better than giving VW 500 (possibly more?) so still saving a little.
