  • Exhaust tips need replacing

Mine are very sooted up and even after cleaning don't look 100% clean. It also doesn't take long for them to get all sooted up again after cleaning. Can I just buy new chrome tips from say SuperCheapAuto, pull off the old and push on the new ones?

Clean them up with 0000 steel wool and a metal polish like Autosol. I have seen Mk6 GTI tips go from looking like they were painted black back to factory finish.

You could try a high temprature wax to help keep them clean, not sure how long it will last on an exhuast though.

I have been using Autosol but will try with the steel wool next. I'll hit up SCA and Autobahn to see if they have the high temperature wax. Thanks.

0000 grade steel wool and Autosol got me these results on my Mk6 GTI. Car was purchased 2nd hand and i don't think they had ever been cleaned.

Bunnings Warehouse, in the paint section near the sandpaper.

Soz I can't be any more specific.

                Lol!

If it's the same as my local Bunnings, it's to the right of the sandpaper

Lets us know how you go

You could also try compound polish, although it might take a while to polish up.

Autosol with just a rag to start with would be better. The polish is quite abrasive to start with and i'd be surprised if it is unable to remove carbon.

I've done Autosol with a rag many times and it gets most of the soot off but leaves specks on the inside and outside near the mouth. Haven't had a chance to get the 0000 grade steel wool yet.

At least the GTI got tips, they cheaped out on the Cab (and the other non GTI's ). I've got a brillo pad sort of sponge thing in my car cleaning kit which does a decent job of removing the carbon.

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.
