Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • R8 coil packs for the 118TSI

    I stumbled across this today:
Set of R8 coils with adapter

So there seems to be an upgrade path available for the twincharger now... anyone tried this?

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

No, but I replaced the coil packs with OEM ones on mine when I did the engine swap. I've read these might be more reliable for tuned engines but thats a pretty big hit to the wallet.

Ha! So pretty. They sure picked function over form at the VAG factory for the engine bay though. Once that 118TSI plastic cover comes off it's a whole lot of ugly compared to the old Italians... We do get the supercharger scream standard though.

So I think it's time for this upgrade. Has anyone actually done this?

Also, does anyone know of any more local suppliers?

BMR Autowerks and VTech Aust sell the R8 coils locally, but with the adapter plate im not aware of any other suppliers other than the link in your first post.

Mostly for my own later reference:

R8 Coil Pack (OE/Genuine) 4 pack - BMR Autowerkes - Cars Enhancements, Modifications & Upgrades

V-tech seem to have two variants so I need to understand the difference other than being the newer part. Both appear to be listed for the Golf.

I never did, but am still interested. This is something that is still in the back of my mind... just feeling a little short of funds right now.

Ah gotcha. I just asked V Tech about it and will update this thread when I hear back from them.

Well I got a pretty prompt response from V Tech.

There is no difference beside part numbers due to different R8 engines.
                      Overall same coilpack.

The 06e revision F is newest and one of recommend going

It looks like #2 coil is fried and has kicked on a the CEL

VCDS shows it missing constantly at idle, although it appears to clear up with a little throttle. None the less I need to get at least that one replaced ASAP. Trying to source one locally at the moment, for reference:

                        NGK Spark Plug: SIZFR6B8EG
                        NGK Ignition Coil: U5002

                        Bosche Ignition Coil: 0 986 221 023
                        Bosch Spark Plug: 0 242 240 665

                        OEM Coil: 036 905 715 G
                        OEM Spark Plug: 03C 905 601 B

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

Did you try to swap the coils to see if the misfire follows?

That was the plan for this morning, swapping over the coil and replacing the spark plugs but it seems that you can't buy these plugs on a Sunday at the usual parts places. So I ended up swapping the plugs and coils between 2 and 3. I'm only about 75% sure I acutally swapped them over, but the problem remains on #2 so it looks like it's not the coil/plug

I've had the computer out logging the fault and it seems that it's only missing in idle. Giving it even a little throttle and the mis stops. That means that when driving around and it's also not there. It appears to run and drive smoothly only showing signs of miss at idle.

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

                              Another option...

Apparently these are Custom R8 coils in the 1.4 TSI sizing eliminating the need for a spacer. Not sure if the wiring is plug and play in the 1.4...
