  • Wear on Front Strut Top Mount

Been chasing down an annoying noise from the front suspension and took the front strut out today. It was replaced about 10,000kms ago by a Panel beater after an accident, so not a dealer repair. Sound started about 5,000kms ago and is a rattling on light rough surfaces. On big bumps and smooth roads, all is good.

The front shock feels fine, but there is strange wear on the top mount. See the attached photos.

Is there supposed to be a washer or something that goes between the top of the shocker and this mount ? On my car they just butt up against each other. The wear on the top mount hole also look abnormal.

    It is a 2011 Mk6.

Running it for 5K with the nut loose? The hole would be round for manufacture.

Well, update is i inspected all components , shocks, ball joints, tie road ends, and all looked ok, as they should in a 50,000km old lightly driven car.
I put everything back together and ensured the top strut bolt was done up very tightly. When i undid it, there was still a small amount of pressure from the spring on it, so i dont actually know if it was loose.
Good news is that the front end rattle had gone completely !! I am very happy.

        Lets see if it lasts.

Funny that at one stage i thought the rattle was from the tailgate, as the sound was very difficult to isolate.

        Cheers
