Good choice getting rid of the Mazda, though in all fairness most of the road noise comes off of those potenza's they tend to run.
Ok then, my idea and it's not a good one: Since the Rattle is always present at that range...........
    Maybe the Turbo??

If I'm right (hope I'm not), I think you'll need the $100 more than me )

Actually, something like that used to be a fix for any rattles. Put a ball bearing in the ash tray. It will rattle so much (with the metal ash trays) that it will drown out any other rattle, and you know what's causing it!!!!!!

How about to give the dealer chance to fix it? Or have you already tried?

It could be the plastic nacelle around the steering column — have had similar rattles from there in other makes.

Could also be something loose behind the driver's cubby — some of the wiring assembly isn't always where it should be.

It's easy to pull that out and check — squeeze the sides in and it'll drop down a bit, then just pull hard.

I know the wastegate rattle you are talking about, but this is not applicable to the Golf R.

I had that rattle on my GTI, its a different sound though.

I've had rattlings coming from the vents a few times particularly when driving on coarse roads, they did sound close to what you have in the videos. The bit you move back and forth to open/close the vents vibrate and cause the noise. BUT definitely NOT when I'm cruising on smooth roads. You can hold them tightly while revving and see if anything changes.

Another stupid suggestion (well it worked for me) would be removing your sunglasses from the holder above (If you have them there), and be sure they are not responsible. The last time time it happened to me it didn't even sound like the noises were coming from above, it sounded like they were coming from the dash or the gear area. the noise stopped after i removed them. All the best mate!

First I thought wastegate rattle, but Actually sounds like number plate rattle but I'm sure you have checked that out. I'm sure this has been done but maybe you need to get 4 or 5 people around the car and just go over everything whilst in that rpm range.

After removing the wipers, plastic cowl, wiper motor and mechanism, Canbus module, ECU and ECU plastic bracket, top of firewall bit last night, im more certain than ever that this rattle is coming from inside the cabin.

Took the car for a drive with all these bits removed (except the Canbus of course) and the rattle is still there. Only bonus was that the engine noise was epic with all those pieces missing.....who needs bonnet vents.

So you are going to slowly disassemble your car until you find the rattle?
