Sick Golf R - EPC and flashing engine lights on (SOLVED: Fuel Injector)
Car started missing and shuddering when placed under load going up a hill. Engine light stared blinking then turned off when the EPC light came on, after it shut down the offending cylinder. Not that I have a fault code monitor on it but I can tell by the loss of power and engine sound.
Oddly enough, I'm thinking its not engine anymore. I'm thinking it has something to do with the engine management system or DSG. The reason being is each time this has happened the engine has been placed under load because the car hasn't changed down. Usually on an incline of some kind too. The car was fine all week, which is why I only today said it was solved, now it isn't.
I have also noticed it occurs when I have the cruise control either engaged or in the on/stand by position.
Another odd thing occurred when I had to stop with the EPC light on and a cylinder shut down. As I tried to move off in 1st gear the car revved to about 5-6000rpm and slowly shuddered and bunny hopped its way across the intersection until I changed the gear manually as Drive didn't seem to work. It did after that.
Back to the dealer on Monday morning. Why does this always happen on a Friday night???
Sick Golf R - EPC and flashing engine lights on (SOLVED: Faulty spark plug)
Time for some new ignition coils i think. High load and/or high RPM when they are working hard will show up any weaknesses in these, and they are renown for being fragile at the best of times. If you have done 80,000km on the stock ignition coils i'd be changing them. You can get a full set from USA for about $130

It got four new ones three weeks ago. Car was fine for a week or so then bam. New spark plugs and car seemed fine for a week then bam again. And here we are.
I forgot to mention that when I drove up to the garage door I switched the engine off - as I didn't want the neighbours hearing my new air cooled engine (that's what it sounded like on 3 cylinders). When I switched it back on the EPC light was off and all four were going.

Picking car up today from the dealer. Cylinder No.3 was the culprit again so they have replaced the injector for that cylinder. Will test and get back to you.

Hopefully thats the end of it. The injectors get clogged up with carbon buildup and then block off the spray holes causing the misfire. Or i guess it could just be faulty and the carbon buildup isnt an issue just yet - but i'd put money on carbon buildup.
You can get the torque pro app & obd II bluetooth dongle for about $20, cheap as & good for running a scan yourself! The error code will still be there to retrieve...
Do you or anyone else have a bit more info on this? Any specific dongles I should look at or avoid?
Just had a very similar sounding problem with mine last night (GTI Mk6) and it went to the dealer on the back of a flat bed this morning. The NRMA (VW Roadside Assist) guy seemed to think it may be an injector. Hopefully it gets sorted first time unlike the OP.
Well supposedly the problem was the ignition coil. Hope I don't have the same probs as the OP and keep getting the same issues. Time will tell. 37 days warranty left!!

The ignition coils on these engines are rubbish. No doubt they just changed the one causing a misfire which will probably mean that one of the other 3 will start to play up soon.....2 days after warranty expires. If that happens you can get a full set from the USA for about $130 or so.
So far so good on the way home. I have a few hills etc in my area and it didn't have a problem under load. One good thing came out of it....they washed my car!

I would just say they are good value for what you pay, mine works great! The 1st time i used it, i had to enter a p.i.n. into my phone to get the bluetooth connection paired. The p.i.n. wasn't supplied, so i guessed 1111, that didn't work. So i guessed 1234 & it's been good ever since! I don't use it all the time, i've had 2 instances where i've checked a fault code & also tried the 0-100 & 1/4 mile times a few times (under controlled conditions, using a professional driver, of course! )
Probably the only tip would be don't get the absolute cheapest one you can find, pay an extra 5 or 10 bucks & get a middle of the range one...
Since the No.3 injector has been replaced the car (touch wood) has been fine. The problem now is trying to desensitise myself to every vibration in the car/road making me think the engine is about to start missing again.

Just out of interest, did the dealership say whether the injector was actually faulty (playing up) or if it had carbon build up on it? I remember a while back (probably a good year ago) there was another guy who was having problems with his Golf R and it went on for ages - turned out in the end to be a faulty injector. I think he was in Wagga or somewhere like that.
