Driving home yesterday my Golf R's engine started missing when placed under load. Thought it may be dirty fuel or a bubble or something as it went away after 3,000rpm, but was still down on power.

Going up a hill a little later the car starts missing and stuttering again with a big drop in power. The yellow engine light started flashing so I pulled over and turned it off to consult the manual as to what it meant. It said that the engine was missing and causing problems with the catalytic converter - take to dealer.

Rang dealer and booked in for Monday morning (it would happen on a Friday). Started off again slowly then the EPC light came on. Drove home very gingerly with everything turned off. Along the way I noticed that the engine started missing when under load below 3,000rpm. Using the paddles I kept the engine above 3,000rpm and it didn't miss. Didn't sound right though and still down on power.

Anything I should tell the dealer on Monday morning to look for, assuming I can get there under my own power?

not really had any issues with golfr.... its been a good motor so far... hard to tell without getting a fault code read out... VDUB....

Ignition coils id say. They are a common failure item on these engines and if you are still running the stock ones after 84,000km then id say thats it. You can get a full set delivered from USA for about $130 so you don't need to pay the ridiculous dealer prices (they charge over $100 just for x1 coil).

Started her up this afternoon for the first time since friday when I limped home and low and behold no problems. Took her for a drive expecting more flashing lights and failing systems than Jack Lemon in The China Syndrome but nothing?? WTF is going on??

could have been crappy fuel or if it is the ignition coils sometimes they only break down randomly especially when hot.. Or could have been a electrical sporadic issue like a wiring pin etc that caused a issue that has now moved or corrected itself... still worth finding out what fault code it logged even if the fault doesn't return, it will more than likely happen again and you don't want to be in the middle of no where when it happens... Get it scanned as it will have remembered the fault code even if the light has gone out.. It will at least put you mind a rest to see what it was..... VDUB...

You can get the torque pro app & obd II bluetooth dongle for about $20, cheap as & good for running a scan yourself! The error code will still be there to retrieve...

Bought a mini one fr ebay and i keep it in the car. Very handy for at least finding out what the CEL is all about.

Lucas-R, spot on Mate. Had the car checked over today and all the indicators are an ignition coil. All four being replaced.

Car started missing again tonight as soon as a load was put on while the engine was hot. I was told that when the computer senses a missing cylinder it turns the fuel injector off. Saw that tonight as my fuel economy was better than I'd seen it for a long time, and that was despite deliberately keeping the revs high manually to avoid putting a load on it.

Good to hear - a common issue thats easy to fix. Are they changing them under warranty or is it coming out of your own pocket?

yes, interested to know if u fall under warranty, being a 2010 with 84k km.
i had coilpacks go out in my 2011 gti with 27k km, but they replaced all plugs and coilpacks under warranty

All done under warranty.

However, car started missing again tonight when under load and the engine light started blinking again. Didn't get the EPC light as I think I cut the load and added power in time for it not to shut down a cylinder, which it had been doing. New coils may not have fixed this issue.

Might try a bottle of fuel injector cleaner in the tank, despite only ever using 98. Just want to get this sorted as I'm fast losing my love affair with my Golf R.

Could be an injector - either faulty or its clogged up with carbon.

Have the spark plugs been changed?

Has the fuel pump(s) (theres 2 of them) been checked. Also check the cam follower as theres a fair chance it needs replacing with 80,000km under its belt.

Thanks Lucas-R. Been OS for last week so couldn't respond. Took the car for a spin yesterday afternoon and after a while she nearly died. Engine light came on then EPC when placed under a lot less load then what would produce the problem before. While it was going it was OK. However, at an intersection as I tried to get across she shuddered violently, almost backfiring, and could barely move off the mark. I'm going to talk to the dealer today and get it booked in with a request to look at the items you raised. I checked the previous services and the spark plugs were replaced at the 60K.

Solved.

Issue was a faulty spark plug on the no.3 cylinder. No signs of damaged on the plug either to give away what the problem was.

All four replaced and car just fine.

Good to hear its fixed and that it was nothing serious. Do you know if the spark plugs been changed at an earlier service? I think its 60,000km that they are due on these engine (i have already replaced my plugs and ignition coils at 15,000km due to a small misfire).
