Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

After some lengthy research I finally found that the difference in the steering rack is a different steering rack providing less lock to lock stopping any chance of the larger 19s fouling any part of the inner guard or suspension. The official response from VW technical is as

    Dear Shane,

Thank you for your email and enquiry. Our technical department advise:

-has to do with lock to lock travel of the steering rack.

-As the 19 inch rims are bigger its possible they may foul on a suspension part or inner guard.

-Each PR number belongs to a package and for each package there is a different steering rack.
Apart from that they are the same.

So looks like no affect on the cars handling, steering etc. It's just that if you do experience any rubbing you will have to not use full lock.

^ to answer one of your earlier questions, the 19inch wheels give you the black headlights.

The standard 18inch wheels come with silver headlights, but when you option the 19inch wheels (regardless of whether you choose silver or black wheels) you get the black headlights.

I have the silver 19inch wheels on my car with the black headlights.

Mind you, in your case, the silver headlights look really good on the black R's. Regarding your wheels that the dealer has fitted from a Scirocco, id be requesting the proper Golf R wheels if it was me. The extra 9mm or so that the Scirocco wheels stick out could cause you issues down the track (rubbing / getting caught on the guards when hitting potholes or turning / insurance etc).

Definitely got the dealer to get the proper Golf R wheels for the car along with the plastic tabs and they reckon they will out what Volkswagen recommend for the steering. Only thing is I don't think I will trust them to touch the car with regards to any steering mods as this will more than likely lead to more problems given there lack of knowledge so far

As far as the lights, I have what I want, by coincidence

            Very interesting,

I'm looking for new wheels and I like the look of those fitted to R's, and I assumed (wrongly) the Golf R's and Scirocco wheels were identical.

            Good info

Sneaky dealer though retrofitting the incorrect wheels, well spotted.
