Also the dealer i bought my golf from in vic said to get the 77tsi as the 90 and 118 were not p plate legal.
The Golf 77 is a TDI (Turbo Diesel) not a TSI and as such is automatically approved. The only real issue there is it is only a Trendline and my son is after a little more than that....

This is incorrect. The 77TSI is the new bottom-of-the-range Golf (1.2L turbo petrol). The 77TDI engine (1.6L turbo diesel) is sold in the Golf BlueMotion.

No it isnt. The 77TSI is a 1.2litre turbo petrol. The 90TSI is a 1.4litre turbo petrol. I think you might be referring to the newly released Bluemotion version of the Golf which also has a 77kw engine (turbo diesel)

Ha... serves me right... I didn't even look at the POV model... but again.... it is a Turbo engine and still comes under the High Performance banner... as such it will need an exemption just as the 77TSI in Polo and Fabia and that is for Vic, NSW and Qld. They will all get the exemption of course... with Power to Weight of 70kw / Tonne or less (in the case of Golf Trendline).

This whole "high performance" vehicle ban is just ridiculous. So many manufacturers are now moving to smaller capacity engines now and adding a turbocharger to boost the power. As someone mentioned earlier in this thread, a P plater could go out and buy a Nissan 350Z or Honda S2000 etc etc, which are capable of going much faster than a 77TSI / 90TSI / 118TSI Golf, yet they can't buy a much safer Golf due to the fact that they are turbocharged.

we went through this process for my youngest brother a few years ago for our family Passat 2.0T wagon.
Their approval process is case-by-case but for us it wasn't too difficult.
They did however do a background check of the address the Passat is registered to, found there were other non-high performance vehicles and rang us to ask why he can't use those cars
              they were a 1976 Beetle and a 1959 Beetle
We explained to them that we felt the Passat was safer than the beetles. They agreed.
              What a dumb law!!

Makes me wonder how it works for buying a new car. You would think that the "is it reasonable to use a non-"high performance vehicle"" bit could mean "why can't you buy a different car". It's such a stupid, nebulus and poorly thought out restriction.

I think the 90 tsi only has alloys and cruise over the 77tsi. Not much of a difference. U retrofitted a GTI wheel and cruise to my 77tsi and it is now higher spec than a 90.
All model variants include the same safety features (airbags; abs etc.)

Interesting to note that NSW have a published list of "Six Cylinder" cars that are also Banned.. these include BMW M3, Nissan 350Z some Merc's and most Porsche's... then my better half sends me a Pic she took today of a 911 Porsche with Red P Plates..

There is also another funny part... the Golf GTD which has more torque than a Golf R and not much less KW than the GTI is "approved" carte-blanch because it is a diesel...
I guess no one ever suggested Traffic Departments actually knew what they were doing most of the time...

Quite a few differences that matter to my son though...Cruise control, multifunction steering wheel, better Multifunction display and Bluetooth I think are the main points apart from wheels.
I don't see the point of trying to retrofit steering wheels, cruise control etc... and apart from that... the 77TSI is still not legal for a P Plater unless you have an exemption.

Not really a higher spec... and it is Modified... hence higher Insurance especially for someone under 25... plus as I stated before... it still is NOT legal for a P1 or P2 driver unless they have an exemption...

                          The 77 or 90 is not p1 or p2 legal ?
Anyway, the answer is to play tennis and call yourself Tomic and then u can drive an M3 an
                          anyway.

Totally off topic, but I saw a 2009 Scirocco in white yesterday and it actually looked really really good..

Both. They're both turbo-charged, after all. Without exemption, the only Polo/Golf models drivable by P1/P2 holders are the Trendline Polo and any TDI variants.

Not in Vic. The 77tsi is 100% p1 legal in Vic.
