Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Having (successfully) endured a drawn out dispute with my dealer re DSG warranty, Denlo seem like good guys to replace a mechatronics unit when it was not faulty.

The GTI, about the last three months I owned it, had the usual reversing uphill jerkiness common with that DSG variant (not a fault to me in terms of driving the vehicle)

Denlo reset the DSG and asked me to come back a few weeks later

I told them it still had the issue and they started the process of replacing the mech unit

Was all sorted in a few weeks and as planned, I then sold the vehicle

          • Ho hum.

On a related note the 8 speed auto in the new F30 3 series is an absolute belter of a gearbox.

This and a few other bits of info surely aren't meaning what I'm assuming

              Can't be true

              • No decision has been made. Just a test drive.

No manuals around to test drive, which makes it hard.

I did about 750km in a 320d fitted with the 8-speed auto last May and it was very smooth in auto mode, but can one manually downshift in an auto/DSG consistently as smoothly as one usually does in a manual?
If the answer to the Monty Hall problem was 50/50, the contestant, on average, would win the car 50% of the time simply by sticking with their original guess...but you can only win a one-in-three guessing game 33.33% of the time so it can't be 50/50, can it?

                      Not sure if serious or?

The shifts in both directions in my DSG are virtually seamless and instantaneous - every time.

x2, makes it sound like someone hasn't ever driven one??

                        Very strange.

Disagree with this statement. I would not consider my driving technique "exceptionally fast and experience the limits of their vehicle"... yet my dsg failed.

I'm sorry to hear that. I guess you're damned if you do and you're damned if you don't.

I have said this before, it is the price of progress. If you like hi tech and the benefits it provides then appreciate the risk associated with it. Look at the 380s they are the most advanced airliners on the planet yet the tech glitches. Doesn't mean you get up in arms a go look for a prop plane to Europe.

The DSG is a great gearbox and I would suggest the failure rate is low, we hear about it here because this is where folk turn to complain. As for comparison it is personal preference. Would I have a dual clutch again.. Damn straight and my crystal ball says in a decade all non manual cars will be.
