Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • I drove an MX-5 across the state of Montana in 1997 or 98, redlining it the whole way at 200km/hr. Took me 2 hours.

Swifts are probably more reliable too.

but they're definitely not as nice to drive a GTI.

      Fun vs nice....hmm

As I said, I enjoy having a range of cars to drive, auto, DSG and manual

I wasn't in the market for an MX5 when I was buying my GTI or the R but it has much more fun factor to drive than either (SF will agree), not because it is manual but because of the dynamics.

          Edit - clarification ....
Without being any more condescending than absolutely necessary, your post will help many people reappraise what gives a car the "fun factor" and perhaps save them from their naivety and inexperience, hopefully before it is too late.

Most of us aren't as lucky as you to have a veritable car yard at close hand and from which to sample a range of cars on a daily basis and so appreciate your taking the time out from driving them to share your experience.

That a $50,000 RWD Japanese roadster such as the MX5 can be more fun to drive than a GTI or even an R will come as welcome news to any naive or inexperienced fun seekers tempted to drop $40,000 on a GTI or even more on an R.

A thoughtful and illuminating post, Candyman, my only surprise being that I've been able to praise it before SilvrFoXX chimed in.
If the answer to the Monty Hall problem was 50/50, the contestant, on average, would win the car 50% of the time simply by sticking with their original guess...but you can only win a one-in-three guessing game 33.33% of the time so it can't be 50/50, can it?

Kids are useful (incl the cars we have purchased for them),no luck involved, just good planning.

The rest of your post, refers to a post digging at brimmers, but no doubt you'll catch up. Machine hasn't, but not surprised, he still has issues defending a transmission type

Can I point out that you don't have to spend that amount of coin for fun, if you choose to visit a BRZ/FT86 forum they will be busy wax lyrical over how much fools like us that spend a wedge on an R will never have as much fun as they do for so little.

                      • Getting back on topic, I chose DSG because of the versatility it offers. Although there are times that I wish it was a real manual. I recently had the DSG tuned, what an amazing transformation.

Mmmm, except there are no rants in this thread and no one has said one transmission is better than the other, just people giving their reasons for choosing one transmission over the other. So there must be something else making your mind numb (but thanks for sharing), such as people giving cogent reasons for choosing a manual (useful for people still undecided) and the odd mention of words such as "mechatronics".

Just to further reinforce my decision to get a manual.....ive got my friends Mk5 GTI (90kms on the clock) stuck on my front lawn with presumably a failed mechatronics for the DSG.

The car has no forward or reverse drive, gears are flashing on the MFD, and the car cranks but only starts every now and then (but cranks for ages before it starts).

Tow truck to get it tomorrow and take it to the mechanic.
