If given a choice, I too would buy an R over the 35 GTI. I doubt there would be much difference in the driving dynamics between the two having compared the R with my Pirelli.

My 2 cents...
Polo Gti is the car I can afford comfortably and not lose any sleep.
Golf Gti is the car I can afford if I negotiate it down by about 10%, but I will lose sleep because I'm buying nice cars before I have a house and that dream seems to be getting further and further away.
Golf R is the car I'd love but by this stage it's beyond my price comfort zone.
Golf GTI 35 Edition is a great idea with genuine specs, but if I had the money to buy one and the dealer said 'absolutely no discount' then I'd walk down the road to the next dealership and negotiate a price on an R. If you can get one for 52k drive away and dealers are asking that or more for a 35 Edition then it's a no-brainer.

Also i've herd there could be news very soon re release date : )

Purely a budget thing for me. The 35 is sub-50 (just) and is already right on the limit I set myself. R with DSG would be 54’ish. I'd love one, but I can't/won't stretch the budget that far. The 35 is a nice middle ground in pretty much every respect.
Abandoning the Sydney shoebox dream for the time being so I can justify the expense, but this one will have to last.
Guys, a question regarding fluids. I know it's good practice to check them regularly, but coming from a car that required absolutely nothing outside of regular servicing (shorter service intervals), is there anything specific I'll need to keep an eye on?

I know this is a bit off topic but since we are on the subject of pricing and positioning, any idea where the new BMW 1 series will be priced at? There's 2.0l turbocharged model which is rated for 245hp, with Valvetronic and Double VANOS and RWD. Seems like a nice place to be ... between the GTI and R.
I know Bimmers are traditionally overpriced here but I thought I recalled they might position the 1 series at a lower price to get some of the market that the Golf is getting.

Just thought I'd let oyu all know, a Mk6 GTI ED35 was parked in a servo yesterday on the Mooruduc Hwy, heading down to the mornington penninsular. Those wheels are hideous in the flesh, they look like someone's commodore or falcon is missing their tacky chromies from the northern 'burbs!sigpic
