Not saying your wrong but I can't comprehend how can hitting a button on your steering wheel then talking be the same as holding a phone in front of you or to your ear. Or fiddling around to untangle the hands free cord

People talking on phones aren't paying 100% attention to the primary task at hand and that's driving. Doesn't matter what interface is being used.

To even the playing field, i use a bluetooth kit but answer it while blindfolded to get a similar effect to not having a bluetooth kit.

I 100% agree with BT being a massive safety feature.

I use it all the time, I never have to look at my phone to see who is calling - I guarntee this feature has saved lives .. just might not be documented.

personally I would not buy a car without it.

2) Singing
3) Reading
4) Have another passenger in the car that's talking to them
5) Have kids in the car
6) Are slapping the kids in the car
7) Smoling
Eating
9) Drinking
10) Reading a map
11) Using their stereo
12) Watching their Sat Nav
13) Watching their speedo whilst going past a speed camera

You can't stop people from having more than themselves in the car, or from having conversations. You can't use the law to enforce people's "concentration". All you can do is provide the facilities to minimise their distraction and keep their eyes on the road as much as possible. Bluetooth helps minimise that distraction, keeps two hands on the steering wheel, and keeps the eyes on the road.

I think it's time you let up on your "iTurd" comments, which have been going on for too long across too many threads now IMO. We get it - you don't like Apple. No doubt there are others who agree with your sentiments. We get that too. There are plenty of others who don't agree however, so lets live and let live, OK?

It works both ways. Since Apple customers are still going to be Apple customers, I'd say you're best to just ignore it

Corey. Hands free does nothing to reduce the distraction of the driver. It's been researched. It's the conversation that causes the problem and the fact that the person on the other end of the call doesn't have the context of your driving situation. So they don't know when to shutup if a problem arises.

Modern society seems to dictate that all people must be instantly contactable in any location.

Whilst I've seen studies which do support what you say, I've also seen studies which show that Hands Free devices do also reduce the distraction. It's just like any study - violent computer games have no effect on well adjusted adults, through to violent computer games turn anyone into pyschos.


Whilst I certainly understand that the person on the other end of the call is not in the car with you and doesn't know when to "give you a sec", I still stand by my previous comments. You cannot lawfully enforce someone to "pay attention". I mean, yes, you could make it illegal to "not concentrate whilst driving", but how would you enforce it?

You could also make it illegal to have hands-free phone calls, but again, how would you enforce it?
Also, what's the difference between having a child in the car and talking to someone on the phone? Neither knows when to "give you a second". Are we going to ban children from cars now too?

Obviously, the topic of banning children or talking is ridiculous and not enforceable.

Therefore you get back to what is the lesser of two evils?
Having the facility to reduce as much distraction as possible, i.e. holding a phone/untangling/scrambling for a regular "hands free" earpiece or using a Bluetooth hands free kit, especially with steering wheel controlled answer/hangup/volume controls.

I'm pretty sure that no one can make the argument that keeping the drivers hands on the wheel is preferable to the alternative!

I would think that a key issue arising from using a phone held to your ear is actually one of impaired vision. If I am holding a phone to my right ear with my right hand then surely I will reduce the chances of me seeing something approaching from the right. My hand wont physically obstruct my view directly but I would imagine it is a distraction on that side of my vision?

I'd have to agree with this. Especially "that you can't use the law to enforce people's concentration". However they can legislate bluetooth or hands free calling to offer a safer medium.
