I earn well into 6 figures and run a consulting business on the side that gives another 6 figures in itself. I am sorted buddy. Cars are my passion. And yes, image matters. I put my company logo on it!
Interesting you earn over $200K yet your current passion in cars is a Pug 308
Size doesn't matter, but practicality does.. I need a big ass boot (flat folding rear seats) and ability to put roof racks on it..
And yet you're pricing up a 335i convertible?
Cars will depreciate. It's a fact. Second-hand cars will be cheaper (and may or may not ultimately represent better buying depending on your priorities). If your requirements are to get into the most image-conscious performance car for $60k that's packing a big boot and will take roof racks, my advice to you is to buy a 2007 335i sedan or touring.
I thought this thread was about the 77 TSI instead of the R :p
I've only ever seen one Mk6 Trendline Golf in the CBD. If I was in that market I would probably get a higher spec'ed Ford Fiesta since I'm not a fan of the look of that particular Golf either. On second thoughts, I'd save up until I could get the ComfortLine. I appreciate why they're making it though.
at the end of the day I didn't see VW doing anything wrong bringing the cheapest model down to Corolla's bracket...
after all, that's the whole philosophy of Volkswagen... it's a company who make cars for every one...
Volks = people, Wagen = cars... Cars for the people, People's car... car for all the common mortals since not all of us can buy Lambo or Ferrari...
that said, VW is indeed europe's toyota, golf is europe's corolla, polo is yaris etc...
anyone buying a VW Golf (regardless of R, 77TSI, GTD, GTI, etc) and wanting to send out the same images of those who buy S-Class are clearly looking in all the wrong places...
If VW had intended their whole brand to be those only the elites can buy - at the same level as S-Class Benz, Lambo, Ferrari, Maserati, ASton MArtin, Bentley, etc... they wouldn't have called themselves Volkswagen... they would have had called themselves something else, say, KaiserWagen... KW!
So yeah, VW Australia, go on bringing in the cheapest Golf ever, and make VW Golf a car that any pop and mom, any man and his dog, any girl and her girlfriends can buy and enjoy at so many different level...
Why cheapen the Golf? I look more on our 118TSI as an A3 for less money. It seems like Volkswagen is trying to turn it into a Corolla. If I was putting down $60k for a Golf R I would not be amused to see a car that looks almost the same for 1/3rd the price.
Oops! guess I over stimulated the debate.
The bottom line is VW's bottom line, after all. I can see by getting back into mass market cars, the world's no 2 carmaker (by volume) can only increase sales in Australia.
PhillipVWDealer makes a valid point also, that by becoming a bigger slice of the VW pie, we may get cars here quicker (and hopefully more colours ).
The final word on brand recognition goes to my wife who said " there was a car that looked like mine (118TSI) in the carpark, only it had Gt something on the back..."
Mind you, there is a pink fairy hanging from the mirror so she can pick it from all the other black hatchbacks
looking to get a 77tsi with DSG, I took one for a drive over the weekend and it perfectly fine for city driving, on the freeway it was doing 130 before I realised it.
I got a couple of questions as the dealers are giving me mixed messages,
one dealer is saying yes to both and the other is saying no to both,
1, MDI interface can or cannot be installed in the 77tsi?
2, cruise control can or cannot be installed in the 77tsi?
can either/both of these be installed aftermarket? (not by VW)
is there a competant source/supply of aftermarket options? (in Sydney)
Interestingly, MDI is specifically NOT listed as a dealer accessory. I think that possibly this is due to the 77TSI having a cut-down MFD and not having Audio or MFD controls on the steering wheel. It still has the regular 3.5mm analogue audio jack however. It just means you need to control your MP3 player via the decide itself.
Golf 77 TSI - Are the journalists frightened of its power?
The usual suspects all ran stories based on the VW press release when the 77 TSI Golf was anounced late September. From what I can see none have them have bothered to drive it. The cars are here.
I am pretty keen to see what they (Car Advice; The Motor Report; GoAuto) or anyone on here who has driven think as it seems like a great city tool for the money.
No, Journalists would prefer to drive more interesting cars....
Story about the new Renault Magane RS250 vs story about the new cheapest lowest power Golf. I know which story I would rather cover if I was a journalist.
The websites I quote review all sorts. I would have thought a comparo with maxda 3 neo and corolla ascent would be in order just to see how much better golf is even in its lowliest form
