Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Well I picked up the magazine today and had a read of the article and I'm not sure if anyone has noticed but the GTI was very very lucky to win. Basically only old Paul Cockburn voted it 1st and he rated the Clio 11th. The Clio had 4 1st place ranking votes and a 4th. The other votes for the GTI were 3 3rds a 4th and a 6th. Basically I have a feeling that Paul Cockburn had a bit of a vested interest here and even though I bought the Clio I think his integrity is absolutely shot personally. Especially when you get comments from him such as poor steering when basically the rest of the motoring world rank it as one of the best FWD chassis handlers ever. Good to see the GTI and R get up there though but I think the win was gifted to the GTI.
      Cheers,

i wouldnt buy a clio as renaults have a bad reputation in au for mechanical uncertainties and costs, and its pretty ugly (or out there, considering on ur viewpoint)... a big part of purchasing a car is its looks - i really do think VW have hit the nail on the head with the design and aesthetics of their latest golfs - absolutely perfect for 2009 2010.... and thats why its international car of the year........

they gave a % ranking at the beginning of the article - the gti won due to the % allocation and its all round performance and asthetics

Renaults maybe. Renault Sports are another kettle of fish. It helps that they are all made in their own separate factory.

And we won't mention the mkv quality issues or the dsg mechatronic concerns or 118tsi issues.

I like the styling of both actually.
However with only four points between the two I think without Cockburn's very different judging order the result might very well have been switched.

I'm not dissapointed the GTI won, it's still the consumate all roundervas they said in the article, I'm dissapointed that it looks very much like at least one judge is clearly out of touch or worse.

          Cheers,

The overall results don't really phase me, however I'm interested in their selection criteria. The Mazda 3MPS was not included and was not in last years BFYB as it was not released yet so technically it qualified, however the SRT8 was in a BFYB back in 2007, so how can they justify the significant new model improvements to include this again?? It's pretty much the same car still, it didn't make it last time as they destroyed the tyres in 5 minutes!!!

Anyway Motoring Magazines have their own agenda so I'll have to accept the way they do things, the article was still a good read though!

Maybe Mazda didn't submit a car for the review?

Probably because they have tested the MPS3 before and have judged it not to best in class.

Just got myself the september edition, the article seems a bit short for the winner's page though.

they seemed to have misinterpreted it - i wasnt lamenting the lack of STi's here, that particular car is of no interest for me.

I am annoyed however, that the local car industry is most likely using ADR requirements as a form of import tariff to reduce overseas competition, and we miss out on a whole swag of cars, or pay over the top for others as a consequence
