Generally it's a persons first car. Maybe your parents have thrown in a few $$$ & therefore you are stuck with the "sensible choice" then you get a bit of money & throw it at the car to individualise it. It's been going on for ever.Originally posted by Angryman View PostYou mean a sporty getz thats been dropped on its nuts with 17 inch chromies and a wild body kit. Or maybe it is better bang for your buck over the more expensive R, for basically the same thing.Originally posted by coreyingCoolies. So obviously they figure there is more "bang" for your "buck" in the GTI, since it loses all the performance tests.

It's interesting to see how much easier it is to launch the GTI near its 6.9 second claim, but more difficult with the AWD R. I think it has previously been mentioned how difficult it is not the bog the manual R down at launch. The 80-120 times are remarkably close between the two as well.Originally posted by Prodigy View PostPlease note these figures were in a manual Golf R & GTI, would of been interesting to see the results if they used DSG.
The Renault looks like an absolute dynamo around corners - not so much in a straight line though.GTI MKVI Candy White | 5 door | DSG | ACC | 18" Detroits | Leather | Electric Seat | Sunroof | RNS510 | Dynaudio | Park Assist | RVC | MDI

I agree, it's been proven a number of times already the Golf R manual struggles to get anywhere near vw's claimed 0-100 times, the dsg is nearly a second faster. How close is the manual Gti times to that of the dsg?Originally posted by MurphyTheElf View PostIt's interesting to see how much easier it is to launch the GTI near its 6.9 second claim, but more difficult with the AWD R. If I didn't need 4 doors, and was single with no kids, then I may have got something like the Clio RSOriginally posted by MurphyTheElf View PostIt's interesting to see how much easier it is to launch the GTI near its 6.9 second claim, but more difficult with the AWD R. AWD launches put huge stresses on the driveline, I need at least 4000-5000rpm in my MPS to launch properly, get this right and it's off like a bride's nightie! So one can perhaps assume that Motor didn't put the R through any stressful launches, or the motor was a little new still??
One of the reason's I like the DSG's launch mode, the stresses don't appear to be huge considering the 2500rpm launch but the numbers were quick in the August Motor Mag tests!
And for me the most important feature of AWD was not launching but to have traction when powering out of corners, this is a lot more fun!
I think I have to go out and buy this issue now

I would have thought it'd be a test of vehicles in their fastest configuration - that's what bang for buck is about, right?Originally posted by pologti18t View PostWhy? It was a test of manual cars. Not automatics.
Most cars are faster as manuals. With the DSG, the Golfs are a notable exception.2008 MkV Volkswagen Golf R32 DSG

Motor have tested the GTI DSG @ 6.5 seconds to 100. So that's 6 tenths off, assuming similar conditions (and I've not read the article, so I can't comment on that).Originally posted by Prodigy View PostHow close is the manual Gti times to that of the dsg?2008 MkV Volkswagen Golf R32 DSG

Well according to the magazine the Audi, BMW 330d, 300C and Hsv were all autos...Originally posted by pologti18t View PostWhy? It was a test of manual cars. Not automatics.
Times should only be used to compare the cars on the day and in those conditions.....Last edited by Prodigy; 12-08-2010, 01:57 PM.MY11 Golf R - Rising Blue - 5DR - DSG - 19" Black OZ Ultralegerra - Leather - Sunroof - MDI - Euro Plates - Milltek Exhaust - Bluefin - SOLD

I've got the article here. The test conditions for most of the cars were "Damp", except for the Chrysler 300C SRT8, HSV Clubsport GXP, BMW 123d and Renaultsport Clio 200 - which were all "Mostly dry".
They too noted that the manual R's acceleration was disappointing considering their very favourable figures in a previous issues' test with the DSG version. But I mean, that shouldn't be news to anyone here. It's already been established by most reviews and sources that you'd really have to be a "die hard manual only head" to get the manual R over the DSG R.
The other major complaint about both the R and the GTI was that the ESP cannot be switched off, including that the "they've taken some of the soul out of it" in relation to the GTI.
Apart from that, it was interesting to note that only a single car beat the R in the lap times, and both the GTI and the R sucked in their braking capabilities (relative to the others).
Edit: Oh, on a side topic. I would guestimate that a Golf R DSG with Stage 1 would actually take the top performance in all the categories, except maybe the 80-120 (it'd be close) and the track time (it'd be very close). Oh, excluding the braking test obviously... lolLast edited by Corey_R; 12-08-2010, 02:02 PM.

thats suprising about the brakes.... i thought the brakes on these cars are some of the tightest going around, it certainly feels like it when driving normally.......hmmm interestingGolf GTI MY11 Mk6 Reflex Silver 18inch MDI RSC BT Dark Tint G|Techniq - Buya!
