Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • This rattle is P!@#ing me off! People can say 'shut the window', 'put the music up'...that's BS. It should not be there in the first place. I have to take mine into the dealer on Saturday for 1500km check. I will be making sure I get a reasonable explanation as to why my brand new car has a rattle. It's not something we should have to put up with. We have not purchased $14990 drive away cars here to just have to put up with it.

'It's a characteristic' - WTF... 'So you would like to buy the top of the line Golf GTI sir? Would you like a rattle with that? Actually you can have it for free... it's a 'characteristic' - The characteristic it has added to my car is annoyance and a characteristic of bad quality.

I have purchased 2 brand new Hyundai's in my life and they never had any issues at all, no rattles, etc.. my Golf costs more then the 2 Hyundai's put together and it's rattling!! WTF!

I know for a fact that the VW dealers frequent these forums. Has any of the dealers made an effort to expedite a fix for this issue? Has any of the dealers offered any form of compensation for this issue? Let's not brush this under the carpet, IT IS AN ISSUE... My 50k car rattles!!!!

    • I'm not to fussed about the noise of the rattle but just to be sure, I had VW Australia and my dealer confirm in writing that the "rattle" was normal, was not a defect and would have no effect on operation, performance or warranty.

      • I have an MY10 which does not have the rattle primary discussed here.
The rattle that you guys are talking about seem to sound like the rattle I always hear when I accelerated hard on all my previous cars- Mitsubitshi colt 1988, Toyota Startlet 2008, Ford Fiesta 2008 and Hyndai Getz 2010. All either old second hand or cheap cars.
VW should fix the issue simply because in Australia people have to fork out on average 50k for a top of the range car like the GTI.

        • It seems like VW's attitude to faults hasn't improved since I had a Golf Mk1 back in the 70's. It makes you wonder how they could spend so much money on development and testing of what they appear to think is a premium quality product and let it through to sales with such an obvious fault.

One slowed down next to me on the street as it was approaching a speed bump, as it took off I heard the rattle! First I thought it was a faulty CV joint, but it was wasn't turning, well at least I now know its normal

I can't understand the concept of a 'rattle' being normal. Is this not a fault? I had purchased a brand new Sony TV. I was getting a 'crackle' from one of the speakers at a certain volume. The TV was replaced.

              • Corey: most decent quality manufacturers rely on a tool called voc (voice of customer) to focus on improving the quality of a product relative to the customers perception. Whilst I do not expect to have the issue fixed immediately I hope that the more customers complain to vw the more they will listen. I work for a manufacturer as a support engineer and know that the more complaints we receive about a specific problem the more resources we allocated to fixinG it. Hopefully gti buyers in the future will benefit and also that future buyers will be aware of the rattle.

                • My point is... look at the age of this thread. Look at the number of pages. Look at the number of people who said they were going to do something... and then haven't really.

There have been offers to get an engineer to look at this. APR has offered to investigate a solution if VAG won't. There have been suggestions of banding together to collectively raise the issue.

Yet, none of this has happened.

So since you were quite affirmative in your previous post on the topic, I asked what are you going to do.
Judging by your post there, it seems, nothing....

For me, I don't let this "issue" bother me.

I have learned to enjoy the pluses and overlook some imperfections along the way. If I let such things rile me up so much, I would be shortening my own lifespan. IMO, life is a series of compromises and then you die - so I enjoy it as much as I can.

We have to stand together and fight VWA or they will not do anything about it.

If anyone else is interested in raising this issue with VWA this is the person I emailed - Anke.Koeckler@volkswagen.com.au
As has been said before, a collective effort is required.....

I do agree with you point that life is too short... but hey... it's disappointing that the rattle is there is the first place Oh.. and I do genuinely enjoy the car before and after 2500rpm... admittedly it is only for a short second or so that it rattles for... but it rattles!

                        • the rattle really doesn't bother me, i'm either driving economy style(under 2000rpm), or I'm over 3000rpm when I'm playing on the twisties. even when I do hear it, its not an annoying sound, and tbh if never read this thread I wouldn't of thought twice about it

and the car is so nice in every way that the rattle would have to make a sound like a humping gorilla before it became a problem or a fault

                            • So from looking at that link, it looks as though Volkswagen have come up with a small spring-clip type thingy to go on the wastegate actuator rod and prevent this rattle.
