MK6 GTI - Rattle upon acceleration - Resolved via TPI: 2021062/7
My car is in today for some warranty work (tweeter blown) and had them look at it, the Technical FIx is that it is intended behaviour of the wastegate to enable to turno to operate properly.
Also gonna see if they can fix the rear washer thing, but it may requiore the rear spoiler be removed to get at it properly.
Yeah, possibly, where the one way valve needs to be installed requires the nozzle to be removed which can only be done by removing the rear spoiler. apparantly.. but ill know more when i pick the car up as this is the first one the dealership has done so far.
Have been dealing with VW in Sydney for a few weeks now. VW doesn't seem to be budging from their position that its a characteristic of the car. I`m not saying its not, but just because its a characteristic doesn't mean its acceptable that my car sounds like a 92 Commodore with a loose heat shield. Anyway, not sure its worth any more of my time, I`ll just put up with it but as a long term VW purchaser/supporter I think its pretty poor form, from what I hear their not even looking for a fix.
I`m off to Europe in July and I plan to test drive a GTI over there, if they don't have an issue over there then I`m going to be a little bit pissed.
Just in case you're interested the APR stage 1 upgrade, while making it louder actually makes it sound more like an engine sound rather than something that shouldn't be there.
I wouldn't spend too much money, the real issue you will have is that should you choose to bring a claim, your remedy will be to sell the car and sue for depreciation, which wont be much, $7-$10K maybe. Its not really worth the effort, and I can't see VW treating it lightly given the case could set a precedent. I`m a lawyer, and one that hates big business getting away with stuff like this, but its probably one we've got to let go.
Since you're in WA, would you be interested in chipping in some money to take the car to an independent automotive engineer, as was suggested earlier by Guy H? I know this noise also bothers MIRSAD, and there may be others in the state that might be interested. The only problem would be finding a good engineer, though I'm sure suggestions could be made by forum members.
This sound is really bothering me - I can hear it with stereo on, stereo off, windows up, windows down, people talking - all the time. I'm not worried about engine damage, so it's not paranoia as others are annoyingly stating here. I just think it sounds terrible and I'm very keen to get it examined further. It's not background noise and it's impossible for me to ignore.

I can hear the sound but at the moment i don't really care anymore. I have blocked it out and it doesn't bother me anymore.

Good luck suing them for something that has been designed a certain way and isn't actually a problem. There are minor difference between past and present models so just something you have to accept (otherwise buy a MK5 but i know which is the better car).
If you got a retune and/or intake & exhaust you would have other things to listen to (or turn the radio on).

Why don't you scan it and post it up for everyone considering were up to 26 pages on the rattle?
Would people prefer the sound or the cam follower issue?

Retune doesn't affect the noise. Not sure about the intake. Because the noise is caused by the wastegate, an exhaust upgrade simply makes it louder - or so I've read on the US forums. Next?

My dealer said he couldn't give me a copy of the bulletin, which I found curious. The wording has already been posted on this thread.
Would people prefer the sound or the cam follower issue on MK5's?
Doesn't matter which is preferred. This sound is annoying enough for dozens, maybe hundreds, of people to bring it to the attention of VW. Isn't that the issue, not a comparison between different noises in different cars?

I meant re: the retune, that you can hear the turbo/induction more which may take your mind off it.
Interested to follow this though to see what VW can do about it but don't really know the noise nor worried about it. There are two interior rattles I'd like to fix first.
