Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled
After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.
Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before.
We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

I was bothered by the rattle, so have taken the following action:
- Booked the car into dealer, who confirmed it was a non-fix wastegate issue and showed me the official bulletin.
- Met up with forum member MIRSAD, who has the same noise. Confirmed it was the same noise.
- Contacted vwca@volkswagenassist.com.au to complain about the issue. They repeated the sentiment stated in the bulletin. When pushed, they gave me a snail mail address:
Customer Service Manager
PO Box 2316
Strawberry Hill NSW 2012
- I have written a letter to the above address expressing my disappointment with the noise. I'm yet to receive a response.
- After a suggestion from Guy H a few days ago suggesting we see an automotive engineer, I asked other WA "sufferers" if they would like to chip in for the cost, but am yet to hear anything. I don't want to wear the cost myself, but depends on how long I can deal with it.
What else do you suggest I do, Coreying? I must have missed the other useful suggestions (you know, ones that aren't simply "buy a bigger turbo", or "fit an aftermarket exhaust", or even "turn up the stereo, lolz!!11!").GTI MKVI Candy White | 5 door | DSG | ACC | 18" Detroits | Leather | Electric Seat | Sunroof | RNS510 | Dynaudio | Park Assist | RVC | MDI

Yeah, I'm talking about Guy_H's suggestion two weeks ago, which was a better formalised version of what I said months ago (i.e. take it to someone who isn't VW and get them to investigate!).
I saw that you asked if anyone else was interested in getting someone to look at it in WA - but as you said, no one else has replied who is interested. Hence my comments

But let's assume that I (we) take some extra action and an automotive engineer inspect my car:
1) His conclusion is in line with VW official response.
Noise is STILL there ... and noise is what is annoying me.
2) Engineer's conclusion - it can and should be fixed
VW official response - it is characteristic of the car
What then?
Somebody else to "fix" it ... warranty issue?
After my trouble with 118TSI and extensive dealing with VW customer support, VW Technical support, ... I think the best thing is to go through dealer.
But that is my opinion ...sigpic MY16 GTI 40

We've been refering to Guy_H's post here and his subsequent one.
Basically a VW dealer is not likely to help because they've been instructed not to - it's the design of the car and there is no issue.
So basically that leaves you to getting someone who is not VW to assist - as Guy has suggested.
I think your two options are a little simplistic.
The engineer could find the issue has nothing to do with the wastegate, making VW's explanation bogus and could possibly force them to re-evaluate.
The engineer could find that it is something simplistic which could be fixed by even the owner.
The engineer could find that the issue is actually the wastegate, but unlike VW's assertion that it is not causing wear, that it actually IS causing wear, and therefore needs to be fixed.
The engineer could find that what VW is saying is 100% correct and there is no mechnical "issue".
Now if the engineer does find flaws in VW's response and that it does require attention, there are numerous courses of action for which Guy has mentioned.
If it is determined that there is no mechnical issue, and no other workaround is available, then in that case, I guess you're out of luck. However, at least you've done something other than just complaining in a thread. Although I'm not really sure what else you would expect if it turned out to be this case. Would you ask VW to make a diesel stop rattling? Or ask them to stop the turbo from whistling. Both of these things some people find annoying - but they're not problems, they're just characteristics of the cars.

Yes my are simplistic ...
But Yours are optimistic
You should also include: The engineer could not identify reason for noise ... or does it need fixing or...
I can understand Your point about getting second (independent) opinion ... but if it involves dismantling anything on my car ... it will be my last resort
AS I MENTIONED SO MANY TIMES ... NOISE IS ANNOYING BUT I LOVE MY GTI with or without noise
If I have chance to chose between one with and other without noise my choice is clear (because I complained)
Regarding "done something other than just complaining in a thread" ... before I even "complained" here I registered my concern with dealer twice, met up wit MurphyTheElf to compare noises and when I was sure that I am not imagining I reported that here - not complained.
Characteristics of the car ... I was told that squealing noise on my 118TSI was characteristic of the car ... they have created new pump, replacing some old one ...
Lets finish this one with my early comment - most of the mk6 GTI owners agreed - noise is there - but we are different so some of us are bothered (annoyed) and some not.sigpic MY16 GTI 40

I'll drag out some turbo chargers later today & take a video of how the wastegate sits & has play, I have the brand new one off my Golf 6......
APR - High Performance Development for Audi, VW and Porsche Vehicles.
I also have some Golf V ones, K04 (S3) and some high mileage ones.
That might make people feel a little more comfortable on "play" in a wastegate flap is perfectly normal (regardless of the type of noise it makes)

Saw a dark blue GTI turn into Oxford St Bulimba and heard the rattle - loud metallic noise - that'd annoy the bejeebus out of me. Wonder if the motor was cold, or if it always does it. Didnt take off hard either. I'd definately be taking it to VW for a fix.
Fortunately, my MkV doesnt make that noise!Gone: 2009 MkV GTI DSG United Grey; 2005 MkV Comfortline

Do the bigger turbos come with the wastegate or is it further down the line?
