Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled
After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.
Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before.
We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

My rattle is still persisting now (with 2000+ kms on the clock) as much as it did from day one. It simply can't be dismissed so easily seeing that from this thread more and more of us are experiencing it. Regardless of it 'operating normally', it's detracting substantially from our enjoyment of what is otherwise a ripper of a car. I'm still trying to remember if the rattle was present when I took the test car for a drive, but I think I was so overwhelmed by how good it was I wasn't going to notice something like this...In the garage: Candy White 5Dr GTI VI, DSG, leather, ACC, 18" Detroits, MDI, Bluetooth

Not sure that it's going to raise any alarm bells.
When having trouble with 118TSI (even after W/pump was replaced) I complained to (in Australia):
VW assist
VW Dealer
VW Customer support and
VW Technical support (not many people have their phone number ... It was given to me by mistake)
After that I went international I asked
VW UK & VW Germany for opinion about squealing noise (send them link to my You tube recording of that noise)
All answers where to visit closest dealer
VW UK even sent me list of UK dealers (and I indicated that I am from Australia)sigpic MY16 GTI 40

Dear Mr. Sarajlic,
Thank you for your email.
We request your understanding that it has been clearly proved to be unsatisfactory for us to try to deal with cases from abroad,
since it is difficult to judge individual complaints on the basis of correspondence alone from our head office in Germany.
Therefore, a Volkswagen service organisation has been established in almost every country, having specialist staff who can
investigate and assess such matters on the spot. We suggest you to contact directly an authorized Volkswagen dealership so that
they can investigate this matter further and find a suitable solution.
Yours sincerely,

You guys all need to make some noise, I definately will be if mine comes with this infamous rattle.
They are quite happy to take your money when you sign on the dotted line, so lets hope they back it up with some decent service and fix the problem.

Damned if you do; Damned if you don't:
1. 118TSI - dud piston/rings (albeit very low probability).
2. Golf R - HPFP actuator running off the cam lobe a weak issue with the dated EA113 motor.
3. Golf GTI - Turbo rattle on the new EA888 motor.
Mmmm ... which one do I go for.
I'd imagine that Volkswagen would sort the problem out eventually. If not in subsequent batches of vehicles, maybe during yearly update with June 1 build vehicle moving to 2011 spec.
Doesn't help me if mine is on the ship destined for Aus.
Have to say, the earlier late 2009 examples I drove (4 of them) did not have this rattle; although I was not specifically listening for it.
Cheers.

It is not easy to describe any noise that is not common ... only solution is to record it (like that squealing noise on 118TSI) and post it on You tube.
So I'll try to record it ... but I am not sure that my "recording equipment" (iphone) is going to be able to clearly separate that noise from that "sound generator" generated sound.
What about this - "sound generator" which enhances the engine sound and relays it back into the cockpit is there to hide that rattle.
So anybody there with MK6 GTI, rattling noise and good recording equipment ... if You can record, post it on You tube so we can find is it same.sigpic MY16 GTI 40
