Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • I picked up my car to advise of the 'rattle'. I was taken on a drive with the service guy and identified at which RPMs I could hear the rattling. I go back to pick up my car in the arvo to find that they have done something else to stop the 'rattling' (reworked the transmission so that it doesn't rub on the heat shield?), which hasn't fixed it at all.... The wastegate rattle still exists I believe - it's not that bad really.

Instead, I now have my car back and notice a slight high pitched/buzz noise from the interior which gives me slight headaches and my exhaust doesn't sound quite the same - the DSG farts aren't as loud, the nice burble when in 1st and 2nd gear at the low RPMs is quieter. It's hard to explain, but it feels like the car did prior to having the downpipe installed. I know that it is highly unlikely that they would've removed it, but still... the buzzing... argh.

I hope that this wasn't their 'solution'. This was taken into my purchasing dealership for the 'job'.

Not sure if you're referring to Solitaire? I booked my car in for its 2 year service in May, and once I managed to get past the secretary on the phone and on to a real service manager, I had no trouble getting them to schedule the wastegate clip to be fitted at the same time. He didn't need the TPI or part number, knew what I was talking about straight off the bat, and didn't require me to bring the car in for a test drive.

I guess I'd recommend that if you're speaking to a service rep when you take your car in, make sure you can quote the specifics of the fix and demonstrate it, and make sure they apply VW's prescribed fix rather than going to town on your car!

I personally think dealers wanting to test drive first are trying to fleece VW for extra labour costs for warranty repairs - by now it is a well known fault so who needs to do it? Austral are the worst - asked me to bring it in first for a drive, then will order once confirmed. Muppets. Interesting, when Norris did mine, it only came back with a grand total of 400m travelled - so much for a test drive me thinks..

Well, the TPI does state that the rattle needs to be demonstrated with a test drive. Ah bureaucracy!

My dealer was good enough to assure me that they keep the clip in stock, so I don't have to run around having them confirm the fault and then order the part. Shame not every service department is as good.

Agreed on Austral, wanted me to come in for a drive then book in another time for fitment even though other dealers seem to just book you straight in. Still haven't got it fixed as I can't be arsed dealing with Austral's service department and will be going to Prestige and Performance for my servicing instead.

            • Hi all,
Booked mine in today, at Barloworld Glen Waverly. Service dept knew all about it, and have ordered a whole heap in. No need to quote TPI or test drive. Lets hope after Friday its all fixed.
              Cheers

                • Can someone tell me what does this rattle sounds like?

Mine doesn't seem to sound like a rattle but a hissing noise, like when letting of steam in a pipe. I can only hear it towards the end of an acceleration when I'm about to change gear.

                  • Sounds like a classic rattle ! On acceleration, starts at about 2 grand and stops about 2 8. Behind dash in the engine bay. More noticable with windows down.
XTC......maybe just boost blow off ?? When you take your foot off the gas ??

                      • Actually, that hiss is the sound of the diverter valve returning air to the inlet manifold to help the turbo stay spooled up.

                        • Anyone think the rattle maybe related to the Soundaktor? I had what I would describe as a slight rattle upon acceleration and since disconnecting the Soundaktor I haven't heard it.
