Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Correct. I did brag to my Mum about the power of the car and she was impressed.

So you tell us the R is excessive and in the next breath you say it's a 'conservative hatchback and hardly full sick bragging material'.

    Dude. Really?

The best way is after a trip to get the hose on it and wipe it off with a cloth.

Other than that, send it to a carwash and get them to clean it up for you. I prefer this option

All good. Enjoying the Sunshine coast too much to let it "bug" me

No, I said for road use, as is, the R has excessive power in reserve.

That is completely separate from conservative styling.

          So, dude, yes, really.

I didn't see you refer to styling as we were talking about power for the last few pages.....but ok, conservative styling when compared to an HSV or FPV,? Yep, i'd agree.

However conservative styling appeals to more people than your way out there styling of for example, the HSV/FPV range.

Buying a conservative design is more pleasing to more people than your view of buying something like a whacked out VN commodore on chasers, springs cut in half, 10" exhaust etc to impress people.

That is what appealed to me, the conservative styling (I grew up on modified commodores, before ending up with the Golf), just wished that the GTI and R came with stage 1 power levels straight out of the box.

After all if we look at acceleration times, as one measure of performance
              Falcon XR6: 0-100 = 6.8 Commodore SV6:0-100 = 6.7 compared to the GTI 6.6 - 6.9 (DSG)
and anywhere between 5.4 - 6.2 for the R (depending on what you read)

              • wowsers.. all this cause some folk choose not to tune.. got a feel about being uncool if you don't smoke about it..

Maybe some come from performance car backgrounds and are used to driving hard and fast. I came from an NA 2 litre, the R or even the GTI for that matter are a league and half above in regard to performance so it takes a while to modify driving style.

My humble observation is that as the R beds in and loosening up it is overcoming many of the initial complaints about (ahem) lag, and gear changing too rapidly. For my need in stock form it is just fine..

I am also not sure what the sale impact of a modified car might be so it has me approaching any upgrades with some trepidation. For some a $60K is entry level playground material.. for me it is expensive coin so I tread carefully.

                • I like conservative styling. Seems some kids on here take a while to catch on. Figures.

Street racers killed my best friend in secondary school. Seems there are a few on here. Maybe the sons of those criminals ?

Want outright 0-100 times buy an Atom 2 or 3, even a bike and track it.

                  Tired arguments I know.

The R is a great cat as is. Modify as you want.

                    • Anyone noticed the doors fill with water when you wash the car on a slope or if it rains. Door drains are not located that well. Drive onto a level surface and open the doors and they drain

I see the Passat owners noticed the same thing but fixed with new door seals !

                      From the idiot ....

                      • Wowsers, the Golf is more practical that I thought, I have just renovated my Laundry and I need a 2400 kickboard.. FYI you can get a 2400 plak of wood perfectly from the glovebox through to the boot lid perfectly

Sorry, maybe I should have made the comparison clearer I was using a standard 6 cylinder Commodore and Falcon as a reference point,

we all know that there are any number of cars, suvs, bikes etc that are substantially faster and if we want to use all that performance you do it on a track.....

the issue wasn't whether or not you should modify it, it was discussing your point of "has excessive power and torque for road use.", yes I know you later said you meant excess not excessive

as for your street racers comment, ........

                          • Well, excess and excessive for me I guess because I drive at 2/3rds. The way I have driven all my cars, even the Subie I owned before our GTI.

I understand why people are going for tunes, I did the same on my XT. With the R, personally, I don't see the point but go for it.

                            Cheers

                            • I'm with you Candyman
A tune is not necessary if used just for the streets. Especially when taking into consideration possible problems down the track.
The car is more than quick enough around town
You can never have too much power but stock works well for me.
One day if I can afford a Porsche or similar I'll get one. But I like them stock as something always goes wrong eventually.

Also I notice with these tunes there appears to be no knock sensor. IF so, then that creates very high risk levels.
