Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Interesting that some people are saying the R has too much power and torque for the street.

What are you trying do guys, give VW an excuse to detune the R even more ?

Sorry I just don't think you can have a performance model from the manufacturer with too much power !

VW/Audi should have made the GTI 195kw and the S3/R should have had the 2.5 250kw engine.

The S4/S5 have 250kw and RS versions 300kw+. They should have kept to that formula and given the S3/R 250kw or at least kept it on par with the 135i with 225kw.

At least you can tune the buggers. Nothing a few grand can't fix but still.....

        • Hey, I just saw this vid above on youtube, and I want to know how this person gets the speed to hold so steady at 4000rpm,, in my R, it bounces up to 4000 rpm and then kind of bounces down and around 3000 rpm until you release the brake (which is normal),, this launch seems way more solid,, is it like this in the manual R's or might it be the ECU tune??

Also, I think the answer is NO,, but is there any way to avoid that 1/2 second delay until launch control kicks in?, It's enough to let whoever you're dragging get about half a car length in front before you've even started,, pretty frustrating..

Thanks fellas,, oh yeah, check out this vid I made last week,,

My comment was it has enough as is for a road vehicle and a sports hatch

A track car is a totally different story

            • Make the R as fast as you want imo - if it's too much then buy the GTI

^Nice videos too. Fantastic launch on the first vid.
Some say he was the Stig... all we know is that he drives a VW Transporter.

That's very subjective as 'road vehicle' or 'sports hatch' could be anything this side of a Hyundai Getz to a Hyundai Gets with bodykit+19s.

If you want to thrash around in the twisty roads, in stock trim i think the car is quick enough to get the blood flowing as power generally isn't the issue. I think they are fantastic around corners and that is the strength of these cars.

In outright grunt, the stock S3/R is not much chop vs the majority of performance cars on the street. Especially the local Fords which are weapons out of the box.

I would brag about the straight line power of a stock S3/R to a Polo owner or my Mum but that'd be it.

No, your comment was that it is excessive..........even bigger fail.

                    • Too much power?

I thought my standard R was quick when I bought it... but now its kinda boring because it doesnt feel 'fast' anymore.. might have to start saving for some tuning because as a standard car they arent "fast" at all.. I have the manual though.. so i dont know?

                          How old "bigger fail" ????

Excess is power unused. Excess describes it just fine for road use but for the street racers, definitely not enough.

                          I see your POV.

                          Enjoy

Seems to be a few braggers about.

Why choose a conservative hatchback. Hardly "fully sik mate" bragging material.

Bugoff will take care of the flying carnage.

The "concur" was merely reflecting that these aren't excessively powerful cars.

As for the conservative hatchback, it was impulse buying really. I've had this thing for black & white cars of late.

All banter aside, I believe a mid-high 4's car makes for a great road car. I wouldn't call anything excessive however, that's a bit hypocritical. Someone starts sprouting that, well they may as well forgo Scotch Fillet for sausage mince. Where does it end.

                            • I would not put Bugoff anywhere near any of my cars, certainly not the piano finish

Will sort it out when I get home.

I think it's Bugoff - black bottle, pinky liquid??? Used it when washing my old car to get the splattered, dired on crap off.

The piano finish I take it is any of the black grill area? I can't see the car at present.

So you just use regular washing or something else after each drive?
