Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

I have been investigating getting the rims re-sprayed or powder coated either a gloss or satin gunmetal grey or titanium bronze and then getting the VW badges finished the same. I think that would be much nicer on Blue.

Can anybody shed light on whether to powdercoat or to re-spray ? and any recommendations of people to do it. Obviously quality and durability of the finish is the main goal, and not the price.

There are lots of options available in Europe, and especially Germany, that do not apply here
HMm....well the thing is...i cant remember whicch forum it was (it wasnt this one, but another VW one) where an aussie has bought a Golf R..........in tornado Red. Now THat colour wasnt given to us as an option as we only had the blue, white, silver, black or gray to choose from.

However, he ordered from barloworld 5 dock and they said after a few calls here and there (wasnt specific), he was able to get the Golf R in tornado red delivered here to Australia.

If thats the case, I'm thinking I wonder if there are options we can tick that arent commercially available to the general public? for e.g, i'd love to have keyless go and that colour MFD if that's applicable to our new Golf R's.....

Slightly OT, but when my dealer was entering my GTI order in the system, he said he could actually order the car with a cream leather interior. I wasn't actually jumping up and down for him to tick that box, but it does make one wonder... if the dealers get the codes in their software, what actually happens if they specify these options? Does a red light go on somewhere at VGA or Wolfsburg?

Funnily enough, one of my main reasons for not choosing an R was the unavailability of Tornado Red (all three of my previous new cars have been red - love that colour). If there's a way to get it, my upgrade path is a lock-in.

Yeah, i mentioned this on here the other day about this guy ordering the Tornado Red R, i also read it on another forum.

I have an Australian brochure for the Golf R32 and it lists the colours available, there is no mention of White being available yet there are a number of White R32's driving around. So how did they order these if it wasn't an official colour available in Australia? Maybe we can get other colours.

That'd be something different, can't say I've ever seen one. But DBP is still the best VW colour (much better than RB IMO), so not sure you can have an R32 without it!

Not sure about a red R though

I think the pirates got it! No update for like 5 days now...

Sitting at work looking at personalise plates, only cos its the only way you can get black euro ones in Vic. Can't think of anything worth spending the $700 on though! Should just put the cash aside in the mods piggy bank

                • Thats what I thought Dave. I hit the jackpot with the Clio as V RC 182 (Renault Clio 182 Cup) was available and bought that for $700. However the problem with personal euros, is that its interpretation is up to the eye of the beholder.

You will not believe how many times I was asked if I was a member of the Victorian Racing Club and If I owned Racehorses......

                  • The very first Golf R I saw on the road had the personalised euro plate of V WR 020. Even though the car is not known as the R20 any more, this would be the only personalised euro plate worth getting that is relevant to the Golf R. Unless you use the three digits to indicate how many "killer wasps" you got under the bonnet.

Towards the end of the R32, they bought in a limited number of Candy White and Tornado Red R32's. I'm not sure if there was opportunity for customers to specify options and custom order, or whether it was just a case of taking what the dealers had in stock. But there you go

As for ordering custom colours, whilst the dealers certainly have the ability to put in anything that they want, there is a step on the process called "buildability check". If the order even got that far, I'd say that they'd probably flag that something isn't destined for this country.

                      • Corey,

I read somewhere(either on this forum or golfmkv) that there are only six red mkVs R32s in Oz and they were brought in by mistake.

Some one on the golfmk6.com forum has mentioned that he managed to order a Red R recently. He had to try a few dealers before he found one that could. So apparently it is possible to specify colours that are not offically sanctioned.

Thought that was me for a min, but you're in Vic... my plates are very similar, and follow the same them, ie the R20.

I have spent a fortune over the years with personalised plates, i'm on to my 5th set. I always chose something which was specific to the make/model of the car. I then either left the plates on the car when i sold it or tried to sell them afterwards which can be a pain.

This time around i decided to just order some that i can keep and transfer from car to car so i just used a combination of my initials and dob.

Hey Rexman - and others onboard the Morning Camilla

I checked the vesseltracker.com website last week and it mentioned the Morning Camilla is due in East London, South Africa on the 26th Oct! Not sure if this is 100% correct but really, really, really hope it is!!!

I'll guess that would mean tomorrow our time but as most people already know, it's still out of range for the time being.

Hey everyone, thanks for all your replys re wheel finishing. I will definitely go for spray rather than powder coat. So far I have only had a quote from the guys at trivett in paramatta for $850 to respray.

Can you please give me the full company names of the ones you guys have suggested, I'll start ringing around to find out more and update this thread with what I find out.

Rexman: unforetunately My car hasn't been built yet, must be close though, as apparently it's still scheduled for January delivery. You will probably have yours earlier than mine.

Anticipation is definitely building on my end, thinking bout stage 2 apr already. Lol.
