Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

      • I moved on from boring performance tunes a while back. More interested in something that drives less like a boat (the R). As for torque limiters, agree to disagree.

        • Fair enough on the boat thing, every time I get in a mates bluefinned RS I'm very impressed with the overall package. It does put the R in its place

The Limiters.... I edit both of those beasts in software almost daily now so I'm fairly sure that I know how they work happy to show anyone too

          • Well it looks like that car is out of the equation now. Seller wants too much when I could get into a new MKVII R for a bit more. Shame, this has soured me somewhat and I'm thinking maybe a new Gti PP might be a better option, full warranty etc... Very hard to find a nice R at the moment that hasn't been flogged or isn't too long in the tooth.

Far out, how much did he want for a MK6 R, a MK7 is $60 and you can pickup a good MK6 for $36 - $40k. The new GTI with PP is a good buy but, best FWD on the market.

                Guess what I did today

A day of test driving three of them.

I always had an issue with the interiors and the dubious fit and finish.

My opinion has changed in that area and the actual dynamics, wow.

So much more enjoyable to drive than my R.

Sharp steering, responsive, fantastic driving position and pretty sweet engine noise. Brakes are bloody remarkable.

I'm very very surprised, in a good way.

I said I'd never go back to FWD but the cars were impressive and way better than our GTI in traction and control.

Gee, I may well have found the next car for us. I need to check out the forums to see what they are like on a long drive as do a lot of interstate trips.

I'm happy to discuss this via PM if you want but it was on the wrong side of a new GTI which is why the PP is on the cards. I am keen to lock up a new one now. If I could afford the extra I would probably jump into an R with no options. But this is not the time for me to make that purchase. Maybe in a few years.

                  • Anyone had a look at the new Audi S1? Obviously it's smaller/cheaper and manual only but on the plus side it does come in yellow

Same engine as the Mk7 GTI and AWD, matches the Mk6 R's 0-100 time. Have a look on YouTube if you're curious.
Some say he was the Stig... all we know is that he drives a VW Transporter.

                      • I heard on some report that car sales figures have died since March although prior they had been on the rise so Sales yards have over ordered and there is a lot of stock around. This means you can get fantastic deals right now

May I suggest you keep your eye out for a MY11.5 mk6 R in rising blue with DSG, 19" and just under 30,000 km? It was traded in this week and the single owner drove like a granny. Owner also forgot to take the Viezu race tune off it.

On another note, just took delivery of my BMW 428i Gran Coupe. What a ride! It's a proper level or two above my old R in every way. Biggest differences would be the cockpit (feels much more cosy), engine (much less lag), steering (lacks a bit of feedback but has amazing turn-in, makes the R feel like a boat) and the refinement (thought i was doing 30kph, was actually 70kph).

I'm still waiting on pricing for this have to replace the wifey's A3 1.8T with something mod worthy. Only downside is no DSG

I've modded a few with simple bluefins and I really doubt you'd need much more.Ok maybe the intake pipe on the older models. The only thing that disturbs me is the engines bottom end, its an older engine but well developed almost at the end of its run I think and I know of two that have let go here in Oz, both were on a race track driven very hard and both almost definitely due to oil starvation on the number 4 big end - eastern creek . Both fixed without question. Its never going to happen on the street though
You'll go through front tyre's like you won't believe. Seats are great as is headroom but rear pillar vis.... best not mentioned
