Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled
After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.
Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before.
We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

I have no idea how you could have had such a poor experience in driving an MX-5, they are the complete opposite of everything you have described. They handle better that the R, and for an NA have quite a bit of poke.. as for restrictive, you are a rake a broom cupboard should be like a ballroom so buggered if I know why you think the MX-5 is tight.
They are great fun
On the flipside I wouldn't drive to work every day in it, think carefully about travelling long distances given it is a sharper and raw driveCurrent Ride: MY 16 Daytona Pearl Grey Audi S3- Performance Pack 1, Sunroof and Driver assist

The piano black trim can be treated just as you would any painted surface but it is prone to marking. You can use sealants or waxes - choice is yours. I'd suggest a paint protection film. This will minimise marking and is more resistant to damage than the piano black finish
Wiping when dirty with a MF cloth will drag grit across the surface and cause marring. Many people won't notice but if you are particular about the car, you will.
Zzz. Just noticed that my b pillar trim is now full of nice swirl marks. Must have been the mob who did my tinting a couple of days ago.
Any advise on how to make it all shiny and glossy again? Scratch x maybe?

If it's wet, it's teh R's Gig. If it's a glorious day, it's the mx5 easy.
It , even though is a 20 yr old car, HANDLES better than the R. communicates better than the R too, and is a far sharper drive. It's a manual too (would never buy an Na/Nb Mx5 in an auto) as opposed to my fabulous DSG in the R, and it is just so engaging.
However, it's seats are nowhere near as supportive as the R, and when I do go on a long drive, the R is the pick. although if it involves some twisties, i'm willing to momentarily sacrifice my back for some significant wide smiling....
Mine's a 20 yr old limited edition example (with Hardtop), and I can not ever see myself parting with it....
Even with teh 19yr old oem suspension in it, it handled brilliantly.. even better with the Tein SuperStreets! Oh, and it has never used a drop of oil..... ()
More opportunites have been lost from indecision, rather than wrong decision....

Get that little Mazda on twisty hills and it is very hard to beat that feeling. No golf comes close to that car-driver-as-one feeling
Another mate who has a Golf R also has an MX-5 and he loves it too. This guy used to contribute regularly to this forum but not so much anymore. Russell, are you reading this?

Well after waiting almost 1 year I finally picked up the R over the weekend.
Rising Blue
DSG
Sunroof
ACC
19" Black Talladegas
RVC
The car puts a smile on my face every time I get in and it is only reinforced but the sweet engine note.
The car is a bit misleading in that I do notice a bit of lag when in D mode, but once it passes 2k RPM you just feel the surge of power come through. I guess I could get around this by using the manual mode more often or leaving in S. The car is just plain fun in S although I couldn't drive it in this mode all the time.
I love how in manual mode the car down shifts as you slow down as you approach lights etc.
Some niggles that I have found with the car
Would like to have a more useful centre console
There should have been a clock on the stereo
Would have like most customisation of the MFD e.g. being able to see current speed on the same line as the temp display.
Would have been useful if the side mirrors had memory built in, instead of just memory for reverse dipping
IPOD set on repeat without being able to change it
Cool Features
The drive / power
DSG
Reverse dipping mirrors
Bottle holders on the side of the door
Bluetooth
Despite the fun I am having with the car, I'm not too sure if I would have kept with the order if I knew I had to wait a year for it. I think I just need to drive it more, although I think the wife has spent more time with the car.MY13 Golf R Rising Blue ; DSG ; ACC ; Sunroof ; RVC ; 19" Black Talladegas

I don't think I could have waited that long. Mine is the same spec except for roof. I found the <2000rpm (more like 2300rpm) lag a bit hard to get used to, especially coming from a MKV Golf GTI, but the car does seem to "free up" a bit after a few ks. A tune certainly helps.
Agree re centre console, its useless, so I fitted under seat drawers for extra storage.
You could buy one of these and you could display temp and speed P3Cars.com » VW MK6 Vent Integrated Digital Interface
There's a good reason for your wife driving it more than you, she probably loves it. For me, the more I drive it, the more I love it!

A tune will get you closer to what you expect but I find now more than ever the car is smoother after 18 months of ownership than when I first got it.Current Ride: MY 16 Daytona Pearl Grey Audi S3- Performance Pack 1, Sunroof and Driver assist

enable it via the settings button, and I think it's in the display menu.
at least you can on an RNS....
hmm...I thought I played with all the settings and didn't come across the clock setting, might only be available with the sat nav...
will have a look at it again
Will consider a stage 1 tune a bit later, still getting used to the car
This is my first turbo car so I guess I got to get use to the lag, although it isn't that noticeable.
Will be getting opticoat this weekend.Last edited by bobdog; 11-10-2012, 10:02 PM.MY13 Golf R Rising Blue ; DSG ; ACC ; Sunroof ; RVC ; 19" Black Talladegas

Sounds like you went through what I went through, ordered in Oct 2011, was still waiting last month. Didn't really mind, was the only car I wanted so I had no choice, i wasn't about to compromise on my drive. But when you wait 12 months, it just makes it more likely that something else can creep in and catch your attention. They should consider this.
Have fun with it, great things.Last edited by jlgumby; 11-10-2012, 10:26 PM.

Thanks
Enjoying the car now, I guess that is the important thing.
The annoying this was that VWA have no idea what was going on. I called up in Jul 12 asking for an update and they said it was still a dealer order and don't know when it was going to be built.
I called the dealer and said given the wait I wanted to cancel the order, they said to give them a day to follow up. Few hours later they call back and say that the car was actually built and was waiting to be loaded on the ship.
After given the VIN was daily check up to see where the car was, suck that it took the long way to get to Perth
Have you got your car yet?
I was tempted with the Focus ST and even thinking about the 328i although the price was significantly higherMY13 Golf R Rising Blue ; DSG ; ACC ; Sunroof ; RVC ; 19" Black Talladegas
