Golf R Observations and Questions

I know how you feel, if they were just able to tell you it was coming, everytime I asked, they could only tell me that the factory has the order. Thanks.

I got a bit carried away and am now waiting for a 1M. Just happened to be talking to a dealer and turned out they had one on the water making its way over. So I thought what the hell, I've worked hard, enjoy the results of it and get what I want. So I cancelled the R and dropped them a deposit on the M. Bit more money but due to the limited production, I reckon it will hold it's value very well. So the cost of ownership over 3 years may even be less than had I bought the Golf as BM threw in free servicing for three years also. We'll see. Will be fun.

At least you will now own a car which is exciting to drive! Huge contrast the the rather dull driving experience that VW cars offer... good for you mate you will LOVE it

I hope that comment was laced with sarcasm, cos I absolutely love my Mk V GTI currently. It may not have the most communicative steering and the brakes may be over sensitive, but brilliant car. I Love the R too! Although when I drove it I was unsure if it was much more enjoyable than the GTI, but I didn't want FWD again, and it looks fantastic................ in White.

Saw a CW R on the road the other day and just wanted it again..... and the dealer offered my $13K for my GTI! What rubbish. If I can't get around 20 I'll keep it, it's too good.

But back on topic, I rode in a mate's R on the weekend and I was amazed at how loud the thing was from the back seat. Could almost not have a conversation when he was under light accelleration. I'd never sat in the back but it seemed much quieter in the front from my recollections. Stock Exhaust. His wife always comments also that it's too loud.

No sarcasm at all bro. They are comfy cars with nice interiors and very practical and hey they also make great torque as well but very dull and boring to drive, not trying to start an argument at all its just a fact they were not built to be a drivers car they were built to try and appeal to a broad market which they do.

My "observation" or complaint with my Golf R is the steering, one word - wooden. But hey, it is a fantastic car for what is, It is a compromise as most mass produced cars are. IMHO

I noticed driving an R with the common tread Dunlops was a lot less direct and responsive compared to the Contis that came on my R standard

Really surprised me actually. Not sure what tyre pressure the owner was running though

Wheel alignment is also worth checking

Agree however, the entire Golf range is about broad appeal, good all rounders for not much cash.

I picked up my Golf R on Friday and have a question. This has been discussed somewhere before as I recall reading it but can't seem to find where it was or which forum, tried searching but no luck... So the Golf R brake pads... I remember reading they are quite hard, plus emit HUGE amounts of dust (confirmed), and someone said that they can form 'hard spots' and ruin your rotors quickly. I have noticed lines in my front left rotor that you can feel when you wipe your finger over the rotor. I have only driven 200kms and have not braked hard... yet! Is this an issue I can take back to the dealer... seems to just be the front left so far. What have other ppl experienced? I was thinking of just swapping them over for something softer which also produces less dust. Had softer pads on my wrx which worked a treat and hardly ever got dusty.

Yeah great point, they fit the intended purpose really well. Never really set out to be a true sports car. But fantastic package.

Yeah had a chat with Lucas already. Pity Bendix still don't make pads for the R. Had them on the rex and highly recommend.

Don't know if you you can get Ferrodo DS2500s for the Golfs but I put them on my track car and it was night and day between whatever it had on it originally. Took it to Sandown and couldn't get them to fade on a track which is notoriously hard on brakes.

After three sessions, there was still somehow very little brake dust and they still pulled the truck up time and again each corner. Fantastic pads. Again, not sure if they make them for the Golfs though.

Feel for you mate, I also placed an order in Oct 2011. They told me March, then May, then June, now September maybe.

Will have waited 12 months and the whole point was so that I could move my GTI before it got too close to 100K kms, now I'm at 99K dammit.

Cancelled the R after waiting 10 months and have ordered something else I wanted and it will be delivered in three weeks!! Wouldn't have happened had it come when they said it would. Bit dissapointed but over it now. If you're like me and very particular with what you drive, it's difficult cos not much really compares to the R I think so it's hard. Painful wait eh...

I ordered mine in May 2012 and was told november delivery. Just checked the VW tracker website and my R is on a boat headed for Aus with estimated off load date 30 Aug. If all goes well (touch wood) i should be driving it first week of Sept.
