Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Brakes, the calipers would be slightly heavier and the rotors weight a metric farkload (technical term). Doubt there is much else, different body kit wouldn't amount to much I think and the R has less badging so that's a saving hehe. Wheels would add a bit more due to the larger sizes/widths?

Mostly its the extra coolness I'd say (aka haldex bits)

    • True, discs calipers and the bigger wheels for sure. I have heard coolness is quiete heavy... must be why I weigh 101 kegs I have never seen the haldex components... just interested.
Was just at the motor show asking (silly me) questions about the 2012 Golf R to which I was given blank stares in regards to the ESP software changes.
I know I have raised my son well too, whenever I couldn't find him he was sitting in the Golf R whilst telling passers by how awesome it is Lol

His old man just has to lead by example now

But if you're giving him a Mk1 on RS and bags for his 18th, then top dad award to you!

Around mid next year I'm upgrading; so if I haven't had an ADD moment in regards to what is my favourite car, which I tend to have, I will be in an R in the right color (rising blue) and all I want is the Recaro's.
I will PM you my address for my top dad award Dave

                        • Is it true that MY2012 Golf R's have the ability to turn the ESP off completely? My R is set for delivery into Brisbane port in two weeks it came off the production line late May i think. This would make it a MY11.5 right?

                              Improved but not off totally...

VW R models' new ESP system - Autocar.co.uk

'All 2012 model year Sciroccos and Golf GTIs and Rs built from May will be fitted with the new system and will reach showrooms from July. The new ESP set-up is a two-stage system that controls traction control and braking. Pressing the ESP off button once will disable the traction control, while holding it in for more than three seconds will fully disable both traction control and electronic braking systems.

The system will only cut back in should the driver press the brake pedal in the middle of an ‘emergency’, be it if control of the vehicle is lost by the driver or if they want the car to straighten up by itself. If the brake pedal is not depressed by the driver the ESP system will remain inactive.'

                              • Considering that race drivers dont "emergency brake" in the middle of a corner unless they're actually in an emergency situation, I don't see any issue with that
