Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Went for a spin today around some twisties. Pushed my R to the limit and lost grip. 4WD powerslide and had the nose swayed approx 45degrees from oncoming traffic (I've never done this before).

I counter steered and the R behaved obediently. Pretty amazing this car.

    I love it!

      • OK then,
After 333 pages of madness I have finally finished reading this thread and all the solid information (Some slightly less than solid) that came with it. My R is still about 6 to 7 weeks away but a lot closer than January when I signed for it.....

        What I have learned....

I'm going to order Lakin plates and plate backs for my black euros, I'm going to take 3M double sided tape to the dealer and put them on myself and if they complain say 'Corey did it so back off'. I'm then going to follow the detailed instructions that Corey wrote up to install them and spend at least three days lining up my back plate.

I know that eucalyptus oil is not just for Koala's.

I know a man in Mona Vale who will do APR Stage 1 for me perfectly, but I might leave it stock for the first couple of months so I can really feel the difference.

I know I need to prepare early for U turns and turning around!

I know where to get an awesome wedge shaped yellow sponge for my 19" Talledegas.

I know that Opticoat is not for Dog Shows.

I know that if a car called FABRR comes up to me at the lights, I should concede immediately and with grace.

I know that you all love your R's.

and....I know, most of all, that I am very excited about the end of July.

        Cheers.

        • Wow .. you learnt something from this thread.. jeezuz H

          This I think is a good 1

"I know a man in Mona Vale who will do APR Stage 1 for me perfectly, but I might leave it stock for the first couple of months so I can really feel the difference."

Had mine for 3 weeks now and just getting to learn the feel difference for each of the modes.. I note you have ACC this is something that is appreciated after having it for a while, good spend in my opinion.

The R at first is a rocket ship no matter what you do then when you get a really know the car well you adapt your driving and expectations to how you configure it. I am only now understanding what most suggest is frustrating with D mode, I only find it that way after flogging it for half an hour in S mode . But you are right, wait to mod it till you appreciate the way in which the VW gods made it

            • My Golf R observation for today was that instead of taking mine for a nice Sunday drive in this beautiful weather - i got the opportunity to drive a Merc C63 AMG Estate for the day.

WOW what a hot car. It's an absolute powerhouse and sounds amazing.

Waaay more exciting than the R to drive. Gee i wish i was rich. It's in my driveway now but i have to give it back tomorrow after work.

              Who wants a race??

Yeah I was bloody lucky. By the way, i was next to ravine and could've plunged into it. Oddly no ESP lights were flashing?

I don't know what would've happen if I was in a GTI uh oh...

Correct!!! Sugarloaf Reservoir Roads were pretty damp with fallen leaves everwhere.

Mate's A5 Quattro drifted too! I think I'm goanna stick to slow city driving for a while hehe...

                        • Ah ok, I've driven westwards up Eltham road which wasn't too bad (not that it takes you anywhere exciting after that unless you head back up north towards King Lake)

Do you mean the traction control list? Cause the Engine light really shouldn't be coming on mid corner... if it was your engine light, have you checked oil and coolant levels? (I'd assume that you'd get actual oil and coolant level lights if they were the problems, but you SHOULDN'T be getting engine lights!).

That's probably not too much of an exaggeration. I was out to lunch with a guy from work. I was showing him the car and driving around the suburb that a friend of mine lives in. We didn't go down his street, but we were a few streets away. When I got back to work, I had some IM's from that friend saying "did you take your car out at lunch... I swear I heard it"..... lol

Yes it flashed up twice, I should check the oil when I get the chance, but it was a very very steep hairpin, so I put it down to the extreme position the engine would have been put in and the movement of fluids causing the sensors to ping.. they dissapeared after flicking on and off.

As for the sound, I can't speak for the outside noise just suggest it must be loud given the response of the cyclists
