Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Fairer competition: EA888 -v- EA113

Here's an Autocar.co.uk review of the Golf GTI Ed35 with same EA113 motor as the Golf R.

The Clio RS-R end of his reign should be produced about 300 copies and they announced a price rather high, around 29,500 to 30,000 €. Sorry for the translation, Goolge did its best...

I'll have one of those over any 400 kW AWD hatch with Carbonio CAI and super-duper remap, whatever the brand!
Interesting read, I hadn't seen the Clio RS-S link on the OZRenault forum, might have to visit VWW more often

"The Edition 35 has an eager nature but it never feels quite as refined as the standard GTI."

These are exactly the elements that make the R and now the Ed 35 real GTIs (fun to drive). Confirms my suspicions that the EA113 is the key difference here.

        • Yeah, the EA888 is simply not suitable to real high performance applications. APR are seeming to get away with it on their Stage 3 GTI that they've used for the past few years, but I'm not sure what lengths (and costs) they've gone to to resolve the "oil issues" in the EA888. Whilst others have said that Volkswagen will fix the EA888's oil issues with time... they obviously are not confident with it yet as they put the EA113 in the GTI Ed 35!

                  • It's ok, I've replaced my R badging for GTI items so I can be cool. Just gotta swing past somewhere that sells small red pinstripe tape so I can finish the job

                    • Are you going to do the red pin stripe on the grill, or along the side of the car? You know, something more like this:

Remember to try and ditch 116kg's while your at it!

Corey I'm not cool enough for that sorta striping, we'll just stick with the grill!

Not true The WRX does 14.3km/h/1000rpm in 2nd gear and is only doing 93km/h at the 6500 redline. The only way it will see 100 is on the typically inaccurate speedo when taking it to the cutout. It's actually lower geared than a GTI in 1st gear which along with its superior AWD system helps give it more grunt off the line. Interestingly I notice that when "Wheels" tested the 2 door R back in Oct 2010 they did 111km/h in 2nd gear at 7000rpm. So which one should have the fewer gear change advantage? In Oct 2010 "Wheels" did 0-100 in 6.63 secs and 0-400m in 14.6 secs in the R. In 2005 they did 0-100 in 6.6 and 0-400m in 14.8 in the Forester XT. Same weight, a bit less power and torque but much lower geared in 1st/2nd/3rd. They even did identical times in a 4speed auto Forester XT the year before.

I'm not trying to "knock" the R here - I find it so refreshing to have something refined and tastefully finished like it on offer for the price after years of Jap stuff, but what else could you expect with less power, less torque and considerably more weight?
