Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • I drove the R with 18" rims last week and just drove one with 19" earlier this afternoon. I think the ride in the 19" is still very resonable. I'm pleasantly surprised. So that's one option sorted for me. A tick in the box of black 19" rims. Now, I just need to decide on leather or recaros.

Thanks for the link and pics Guy
One of each - it wont matter however the Stage 3 GTI (vs Stage 3 R) could stil be quicker from a rolling start (and lighter).. although not sure on that, they would both be amazing.

Our roads seem a bit better than the Sydney folk, so i'd be happy to run 19" here without ACC..

      • I'd be interested to know which Stage III is quicker on a roading start (50kph and up). I'm thinking with that amount of power, it may be the R.
Also, a Stage III R has more power capability than the GTI, due to the limit of the weaker internals in the GTI.

          • Its a shame they are not both DSG's - the DSG's ability to find the right gear from those rolling starts is outstanding.

I suppose you would need to nominate - say a rolling start from 80kmph with both in 3rd gear.... Would be interesting!

              Hi Dave,

Steering on 19's in comfort mode is lighter, but not too much, than a non ACC 18" Golf R, not heavy at all. I find myself putting the R in Comfort over speed humps etc and then forgetting to change it back. Makes for a good daily driver, throw it it to a corner hard and then this will remind you you have left it in comfort. The suspension is not too soft in the hard corner its more you notice the light power steering. In regards to sport mode some did say this is only good above 80km and I would agree with that. I just had to go 19's for the look, cant believe how 18s on an R look so much smaller than the 18's on a GTI.

I saw a white 3dr with black 19's when i picked up my car, its not my sort of look but it does look mean. My Rising blue came with black by mistake (long story) and I considered this for days before insisting they give me silver. Black on rising blue can / does work just not for me.

One Colour really took me by surprise is the STD VW grey (steel i think) this with ANY of the three wheel combo's looks great, i almost prepared to wait 5 months to go from rising blue for the grey. Again whilst not normally a fan of black wheels, its an age thing, Black 19's on the Grey looks great. Good luck with the toy.

2010 Rising Blue, 5dr, DSG, Nav, ACC, 19's, Roof, leather, MDI, .... R that's better.

Good info, nice to have that level of flexibility in a car that would normally only be found in much more expensive models.

Thanks. I've had a mate start making fast and furious jokes recently so I guess the black wheels is that sort of trend, its amusing none the less.

Just wondering what age bracket you're in?
Highway VW have a blue R with the black rims and I reckon it looks the pure sex. But then again I can't think of a single colour where I wouldn't prefer the black rims (not that R really interests me)

Have had a good laugh at some of the comments in here as well in regards to having racing style bucket seats. Until you've actually owned and lived with a car that has them you won't ever appreciate their levels of awesome. For what it's worth there is no such thing as "cheap" Recaro seats and the Konigs in the MkIV R32 had side airbags. Not sure on why it would be hard to get into the back of a three door with the Recaros unless they stuffed up the design in the MkV where they don't slide and lift forwards like they did in the MkIV. Also I'd be checking that the seats go back to the position you had them in and not a default position as some others do. Would be a royal pain in the ass to have to adjust your seat every time someone gets in the back.

As to fast and the furious jokes, tell them that SWAT came in your house and disrespected your family and you know it was them. Then explain how you live your life a quarter mile at a time and for those 10 seconds or less you're free. If they then don't pipe down ensure you punch them in the face and then shoot up their rides with a submachine gun on a sports bike with a skanky bimbo on the back.

                  Cheers,
                  Trent

I haven't look at the motorsports seats on the R, as when I tried them with the MKV R32, I just couldn't get them adjusted in a way which was comfortable for my back. However, the dealers and members that have had first hand experience with them are saying that they DO NOT go back to the position you had them in. Also, they don't lift forward (the back lifting up and pivoting from the front of the base) like they did in the MKIV anymore. I'm pretty sure the MKV Recaro's didn't do this anymore either. So yeah, they're not anything like the seats that were in the original limited edition MKIV R32 as far as the information we have at hand.

                      Disappointing.
Another reason why the MkIV R32 is the best R car produced.
Even the "cheap", "French rubbish" Renault Recaros go back to their previous position as far as I'm aware. Almost as bad as having a glovebox you need a manual for, except that this design flaw is annoying and an inconvenience as opposed to detrimental to car parts.

                      • That's why you'd just get the recaros in a 5dr .

                        • Recaro's are overrated.
Robby Gordon used a recaro style seat (Sparco) in a NASCAR race on the weekend, and the commentators spoke about how old school it was and how it's just like the seats they used to use back in the old says before they learnt more about safety etc, lol. NASCAR peoples - you know, 5.7L pushrod V8 motors using carbies, and THEY of all people think Recaro's are old school! lol.

Its all for a laugh, but I'll just ask them what the retail is on their ride before I smoke em lol

haha well I can't reply to myself...

This weather is punishing me too. My current XR6T has average tread left on the rears but my brain has already switched on AWD mode, suffice to say the stupid fraud is popping and farting cause the T/C is having a hernia.
