Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

            But it's AWD...

            We'll let the results decide.
If it's on the podium, it's an R with a GTI sign.
If it doesn't make the podium, it's a R wannabe (GTI with AWD conversion)

You'd think only a massive stack on the first lap taking out most of the GT3 cars will see it make the podium, but it could make the top 10, like the FWD version did back in 2007.

                  • Back to the subject....

I have a gig developing software for the Melbourne Granprix.
Needless to say I'm surrounded by car enthusiasts at work.
Last night I did a poll with 12 guys..."would you take a GTI or an R if you won it as a prize (so not taking price into account).
With 12 votes 11 said R, one said GTI. The primary reason for those voting R was that the car is just a better, quicker GTI + AWD, so it's a "no brainer".
Guess what? The one guy who voted GTI just purchased one (so not biased (not!!!)).
His reason for going GTI (apart from the obvious need to defend) was that a GTI is lighter and more chuckable. He has a point...one little point.

So, from a non-biased, but well informed group the popular opinion is GET AN R if you spend the coin!

Get a 911 or M3 if you can spend more though!

That's pretty much to be expected, right? The R is the top-of-the-range performance model, is faster, and gets loads of press (rightly so).

But just out of interest, I wonder how many of those 12 had actually driven both and compared them? The guy who bought the GTI was almost certainly the most qualified to actually judge, and who's to say he bought the GTI because it was cheaper?

Anyway, not stirring the pot here guys, play nice.

Not stirring the pot? Really. A guy just gave his findings.. and like every passive aggressive person on here.. he gets questioned. And by who? You?

The GTI gets plenty of press. Car of the year a while ago?

His findings stand bud. Anyone in their right mind would take an R over any lesser model if they could afford it.

Unless they were on a private investigation and didnt want to be spotted or something, maybe they could get a 90TSI, or something else ?

And what makes up a big part of enjoyment of a car is different to so many people.

These 12 obviously made their mind's up.

To me, I like the Carrera better than an M3. But thats just me, and thats what I would take (Carrera). I wouldnt need 10 hot laps to decide.

And no one can change mine, or those 12 people's opinions. Just like no one can change yours. No matter based on fact or otherwise.

10 hot laps in each would help me decide. Where can I sign up?

I drove both and went R. The GTI was good. But for the limited extra coin, the R is so much more complete

                            • Just picked up the latest wheels mag with another hot hatch Shootout .
There was very little in the performance figures between the R and the GTI.
0-100 was 6.4 for the R Vs 6.6 for the GTI.
                              80-120 was 4.1 Vs 4.3 and 14.4 Vs 14.8 for the 1/4 mile.
The GTI's times were identical to the RS Megane from 0-100 and 1/4 mile.
Pretty respectable times for the GTI!

                              • Obviously manual times for the R...
But 0 to 100 in 6.6 for a GTI would appear to indicate DSG. Great work if that was a stock GTI manual!
