I didn't think so on the first drive either. But I also left it in Sport for the entire 45mins and was doing some absurdly stupid driving so the ride quality wasn't even on my mind
My 2nd drive was more relaxed (if possible haha) and as I had a friend with me, spent a bit of time being more subjective. All in all, we could not fault the car except both agreeing that when you're spending that much money you want the comfort as well for the times when you're not interested in the performance aspect.

They haven't gone into production yet but I suspect it is getting very close to no more changes. I changed colours AGAIN just the other week. Can't hurt to ask if you really want it.

I did say IMO, so really I need it is the better way of putting it. The reason I avoided the Evo/STI for similar money was that they had the performance with none of the comfort/refinement. I love the golf for being able to be fast, fun and comfortable. And just to clarify, for ME, ACC is a required part of the comfort.

Essentially, not having it doesn't make it a bad car by any means. But having it, just makes it better

    • Whilst I have only driven the car for a short period of time ~ 1 hour all up, I couldn't see the need for ACC which is why I didn't select that option when purchasing the car. After reading a bunch of posts in this thread I did start to wonder if that was such a wise decision and asked if I could add it to the car but was a little too late as the car is in "Frozen Period" so can't change anything without a lengthy delay.

If my test drive was anything to go by I can't imagine the lack of ACC being too much of a problem.

      • I think that ACC is a personal thing... just like whether the standard stereo is acceptiable or you need the Dynaudio etc. Different people have different levels of tolerance when it comes to ride quality, just like sound quality

Yeah and hard to convey on a forum sometimes without your word taken as absolute. Adding "in my opinion" doesn't always have the required effect

          • I wish the option list showed if the option has an influence on weight.
I'm expecting to do some spirited driving, so weight distribution and power to weight are important.
happy to take a little hit on power to weight, as that's easily fixed via APR.

Each option on it's own isn't going ot have a massive impact, but a fully optioned car might add 10% to the weight?

My main concerns would be ACC as it may add unsprung weight and sunroof as it would have an adverse impact on the COG.

            • Personally I'm glad they don't.. otherwise any state for which registration etc are done based on weight would probably start including those options in the vehicles stats, hence costing a few hungie extra a year

Btw, if you have noticed that the weight of the 5 door models has disappeared from the current specs. My guess is because it'd cost $437 vs $306 to register the 5 door vs the 3 door for private use in NSW. For business use it'd be $650 for the 5 door and $450 for the 3 door (this is REGO only, not ctp etc).

              • Oh, and after writing my post above, I've noted that the NSW RTA have increased the rego by $20 on August 8th. (It would increase by $30 for the 5 door Golf R owners if VW had actually published the weight for that model).

I've updated the Golf R Price Calculator (as per the first post) to account for this.

This really confuses me...why the heck would it cost more to register a 5 dr as opposed to a 3 door? What's the logic behind that?

                  • Could be due to HBT (Hinge Benefit Tax).

Because the RTA in NSW (and several other states), tier the registration costs based around the weight of the vehicle. So as per the RTA site:

Tare Weight............ Private Use.... Business Use
                      up to 975kg............ $232........... $342
                      976kg to 1154 kg....... $260........... $381
                      1155kg to 1504kg....... $306........... $450
                      1505kg to 2504kg....... $437........... $650
So because the Golf R is 1476kg in manual, and 1496kg in DSG, and the 5 door adds 30kg, that'd be both the manual and DSG 5 door into the 1505kg to 2504kg range.

                      • Yep, coreying is right... my rego sticker says Tare Weight is 1476kg. My R is loaded with everything bar the RVC, so I'd dare say it'd be over that 1505kg (especially with the mother-in-law aboard).

                        • so what happens if your car weighs 1504.5 kg?
