Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Sorry to hear but its all too common for this engine. All the best for the repair process.

The Barina 1.4L (Opel Corsa) was a rubbish engine too - just FYI as you mentioned that you had issues with that car. The 1.8L version that they used in the Astra of the same era was also rubbish.
    Thanks Lucas,

Yeah the Opel engine was shocking, mostly plastic and thin cast elements. Seems they were on the limit, german engineering isn't what it is cracked up to be. I was looking at getting an Amarok for my next car, but unfortunately I will steer clear of VW now, which is a shame the ergonomics and other features in the Golf are great.

I have faith in the repair system, its the time of the road that is the most annoying. Least I am saving money on petrol...

That's a tough call, you plan to avoid VW because of a bad experience with a car purchased second hand and out of warranty? Whilst I would not have bought a second hand VW with a twincharger engine as there have been issues with them (but not with all of them), I know from experience that other VW engines perform flawlessly and VW's are generally a very good car.

Every manufacturer makes a dud from time to time (check out the issues Holden are having with the Captiva) but that should not taint every model they produce.

      Cheers

Yes very good point George, I should elaborate, I was after a Diesel Amarok, still waiting the outcome of that scandal...

I have yet to hear back from VW, so this could all pan out fine, Like i said I have faith, but it is hard to keep emotions out of something like this. What's the saying? Once bitten twice shy?

Yep, understand that, I'd probably have reservations if I were you too.

          • Same issue with this combo in my 2013 Skoda Fabia vRS wagon. (Check out my thread in the Fabia sub folder - not able to post a link apparently).
9 weeks off the road now. 2 dealers, 2 hire cars.
At least VW Oz has been reasonable with that, even if the first cost $320 with a one way hire back to Canberra. Second was marked in a car park, so I might be up for the excess as well, though VW have agreed to address that once the hire is returned.
My compression went from 220psi to 108psi overnight during diagnosis.
Car has 66.5k kms and is 2.8 yrs old. Was brought in on special order (sunroof) long after the VW recall etc was established.
Am waiting to see what happens before I take up any action on the loss of asset value (still under new car lease).

            • Which engine do I have?

My 118TSI (2009)had the 24S4 update, but too late. I had a new engine and set of injectors fitted at about 43k Kms in mid 2012, under warranty. It's now done 97k with no further problems , no significant oil use between changes, drives well still a comfortable car and so on. I understand that there were some significant revisions to the 1.4l over time but, as VW just gives the new engine the same engine number as the old hand grenade, can I tell which revision I have? The car has the resale value of a bucket of prawns, so we plan on keeping it until something breaks that is too expensive to repair!

Potentially adding another blown engine here.

                  Mk6 Comfortline wagon, 118TSi DSG. Built 07/10, delivered 04/11.
                  97,000 km's
                  Cyl 1: 160 psi, 2: 165 psi, 3: 90 psi, 4: 170 psi

This is the wife's. She's pissed off to say the least.

Engine check light 3 weeks ago (when on an emergency family trip in Newcastle) drove it back to Canberra in manual mode keeping it above 2000rpm. Got it to the dealership we bought it from the next day, they advised their computer couldn't talk to the car (blue oval) so booked it into VW, but 2 weeks later. They cleared the fault and said we could drive the car carefully. Got it to VW dealer last Thursday, within 2 hrs they diagnosed Misfire in Cyl. 3, and did a compression test. Now we have to wait another 2 weeks before their workshop engine bays are free to strip and seek guidance from VWA. I've read this whole thread and are convinced it's a rebuild or replacement engine. We have to pay VW $880 to strip it, regardless if it is repaired under goodwill or not. So three weeks without a car than another 14 days, don't see us having a car before Christmas. All the dealership loaners are booked out.

                  Will post updates

                  Jonesy
                  So finally have an update...

The car was dismantled just before new years, and they discovered cracks in pistons 1 & 3, and quoted around $6,500 to fix it via a rebuild. ( a different guy contacted me not the usual guy or service manager who are both on leave) after a couple of internal phone calls, they put a claim into VW. They also advised that the timing chain & tensioner will need to be replaced, however that cannot be covered by the good will claim.

The dealership contacted me new years eve (the next day) to advise that VW will cover 100% parts, and i will need to pay for labour (13hrs at warranty rate of around $125) , consumables, and the timing chain, so around $2100. The wife is not happy with that, she wants them to cover labour as well, s i will be contacting VW Customer care directly, as the dealership is unwilling to chase them further.

I still have the used car warranty from the blue oval, I will be claiming the full $1000 for the rebuild, and trying to claim for the timing chain separately. So best case im out $900, worst case $1100. So im not internested in trying to chase more and delay the repairs even more.

will post the resolution to this.

                  • Good luck Jonesy. Not a 118 but I had a new crate motor from VW under good will, didn't cost me a cent. Their first offer was 50%, I told them that was unacceptable and mumbled some stuff about the Australian Consumer Law, low and behold their second offer was full coverage.

One thing that worked in my favour was that all of our VWs are services on time at the same VW dealer, so brand loyalty and dealer loyalty can have its benefits, despite how much we all whinge about them from time to time. The dealer was very supportive and helpful.

FWIW the repair bill from the dealer was around $12,000 including the dismantling and diagnosis, all covered by VWA

Thanks mate, Our dealer has been very good as well, the issue is with the mighty parent...

My wife contacted Customer Care and managed to get the guy who looked at our claim, she stated our case, saying that VW have admitted fault in the design by covering the parts, so they should cover the labour. The knob said that once a claim has been decided, thats it no matter the outcome, so they wife said they will be hearing from our lawyers...

I think we will authorize the repair and then chase the rest through consumer law, our legal advice to date (free so take with a pinch of salt) has said we should be taken the repair as to minimize VW's damages (so we dont appear to be creating undue mischief) and then go for the rest and damages after.

On the otherside my wife has also started a post on VW's facebook page expressing her disapproval.

At this point we will be out pocket $1300, so I dont really care about what happens next, im willing to move on. Yes its ****e, yes VW should be reparing the whole thing for free and give me a full tank of petrol and a stubbie holder, we can earn that money in due time.

yeah they should, i would've thought the dealer could have chucked it in, being a $200 part, so cost would be $100?

But hey, apparently the universe doesnt work that way for us.

                            • I was over on Whirlpool Forum and there is a sad story of yet another MY2010 Golf 118TSI cracing a piston and requiring a new engine. VGA are only offering goodwill on half the parts cost and nothing for labour. The car has only 40000 km and was serviced by VW for the first 3 years but elswhere since. VGA should be covering at least all parts and possibly most of the labour too. Does anyone know who to talk to at VGA or elswhere to get a better outcome?
