Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Touche Stoney! If we wanted a less engineered car then we would have bought one. I have a stack of anecdotal evidence of other makes having engine / transmission failures etc, but unless you want to troll the other makes forums, you won't hear about them. For all the others that want to bag the VWs, go and lurk the other forums and leave us alone.

      • If I had to get a new car because mine kicked the bucket I'd be looking at the GTI - same great car, different engine and gearbox, more oomph (and turbo lag), but a much bigger price tag (unless I get a good 2nd hand deal again) xD.

Then the retro-fitting would have to start all over again

        • Previous Golf owner (MkIV) and new Golf Wagon (118TSI) owner here.

Well... after many trips backwards and forwards to a prominent VW dealer here in Melbourne the engine in our 118TSI is cactus.
          Needs to be replaced.

Honestly, I am shocked at the rate of failures for this engine. But more apalled at the service from VW on this.
Would be interested to hear the thoughts of others what they have done with the car afterwards...

I'm curious to know what the failure rate is, do you have any figures on this?

Nothing official - only incidental remarks posted in the comments to this article

What stands out for me is
                1. comments where multiple engines have been replaced
                2. the sheer number of comments

Sure, if it was an isolated incident - you would get 1 or 2 people people bitching.
But when it's more than just a few...

                • Syrup, did your car have the ecu software update done when it was released?

Yep - when we bought the car (ex-demo with 3,000 km) the ECU software update was applied when we went in to fix some other issues.
Other software updates were for the DSG.
I'm concerned that a new long motor is REQUIRED after the supposed 'fix' fixed it for good!

We have looked after this car.
It's my wife's DD and we only use V-power, so the fuel can't be blamed for this.

                    • VW Golf 6 118 TSI DSG Engine Warning light lit........?

I have a 2010 Golf 118 TSI DSG of which i took the delivery in Feb 2010.

The car has been absolute bundle of joy . Love the car.... its just great.

                      BUT

Since early last week I was feeling slight vibration in the car when it was idle at a signal.

and on Friday the vibrations started to get heavier and with in half an hour of the I started getting the Engine light flashing when the car was idle but the car started moving the engine light would disappear.

2 hours after that the enigine light just remained on constantly.

Took it to VW Camberwell - VIC .(Thats where i bought the car from and have had it serviced all the time)
They were flat out so will look at it on Monday. I told them to keep the car with them since the engine light was on and the vibrations are really getting bad. plus don't want to be stranded in the middle of the road in the weekend with 2 small kids.

The car has done 36000 Km and has been running fine uptill now. I have always used shell V-Power and nothin else.

has anyone had a similar fault.

Got a call from VW Dealer . One of the pistons is losing compression . Dealer replacing the Base Engine.

Is this a good thing. How does it affect the resale value of the car.

Also would this change my oddometer reading?

It's a good thing inasmuch as you get a new engine, that won't be damaged. That's excellent news. It may take a while for the parts to arrive and the labour to be carried out however.

In all likelihood it won't affect the resale at all. An engine with a fault was originally fitted; it will be replaced under warranty by VW techs. All good.

Your odometer will not be changed.
