  • Add me to the list of angry VW Golf owners. We bought our 2011 Golf second hand with full VW service history in 2015. Its been through 4 different VW service centres, with my wife describing excessive oil use and oil burning smells on a few occassions before a service. At no point were we ever offered the software upgrade that would have prevented the problem. Now they want 7k for an engine rebuild, when i asked how much they would offer for a trade in if the work was done i was told 5k!!! Our car has high Kms as my wife uses it for work which is being held against us. Lodged a case with fair trading, they are now my only hope.

If it's any consolation, the software update probably wouldn't have helped.

        crap engine. crap gearbox.

Why would the software upgrade not work, it seems to have saved the engines it was done to.

The engine still runs really lean (and therefore hot with a high likelihood of pre-ignition) even after the software update.

The software update doesn't fix the piston oil squirters, the rubbish oil rings and the under-engineered pistons.

Was it running on 95ron or 98ron?

I'd think for the age & kilometres you'd be lucky to get a 50% subsidy from VW at dealership rates. You might be better off to find a knowledgeable and experienced independent and either get your engine rebuilt or a 2nd hand engine.

maybe even cut your losses and be rid of it and buy something reliable.

                • And another one, one owner June 2011 model ..had the piston rebuild done at 45,000 k's (mostly under warranty).
Now we have the following symptoms....shudders at start ( not always) and sometimes stalls. Occasional white smoke coming from the exhaust momentarily. Kilometres are now 90,000...always serviced at 15,000k intervals, 98 OCT used exclusively.

Its started using oil (never did before)...currently no warning lights, no loss in power.........am I in trouble ?

To use an Australian saying: yeah, nah. If the damage has already been done, the software update won't undo it. Happened to my 118TSI many years ago at 40,000k. Happily for me, VW replacing the engine and injectors, and ensuring the software was updated fixed the problem. It's now at 130,000 and uses less than 1l of oil between changes. I think it's the updated engine, but as VW stamps the original engine number on the new engine, I don't see how I can prove it. It's worth nothing, so I am going to drive it till the wheels fall off!

                    • Follow up post.

Dealership got no luck from VWA. I then emailed Jason Bradshaw a nice email and got a phone call very promptly from a customer service person for more info. A couple of days later a phone call back from VWA stating due to the age of the car they were not going to contribute.

I then sent a more forthright email, stating statutory laws, ACCC, known fault, etc but again VWA emailed back stating they were not going to contribute.

My plans now were going to be have the car fixed by an independent mechanic and continue to harass VWA for recompense and launch a complaint with Fair trading and the ACCC. The only trouble being I have tried 2 local mechanics who both said they would not rebuild the engine. Does anybody know of a good mechanic near Tweed Heads or Brisbane who would rebuild the engine?

Any help or advice appreciated. I know it makes no sense to spend $5k on a car worth $6 - 9k, but my wife loves her car.

For those who missed my previous post, 2010 Golf, owned from original 105Km, always 98Ron, all but one service by VW.

                      Thanks

I feel your pain. But, TBH I’d just move on and get another car.

You can’t blame the mechanics who don’t want to touch that engine. Who would want to be chased when the rebuilt engine fails the same way?

I wouldn’t take that job of rebuilding the troublesome engine either.

Do you know the cost to repair it via VW ? and will it come with 24 months warranty if done by them ?

UPDATE: VW have diagnosed the issue as a bearing gone in the turbo, so the turbo needs to be replaced.

I wouldnt bother, there are statutory rights although i don't see the ACCC being much help in enforcing them on a car that is 9+ years old and with 100,000km, this most likely would fall outside the thresholds of what the statutory rights cover.
