You might find it hard given that it's 7 years old now, the previous owner could have treated it poorly too, poor servicing incorrect fuel type ( is quite common with people running 92 in these sadly) things like that
If the service history is good and carried out before the recommended intervals then at least you have those boxes ticked
    Good luck though

Hey guys, new to the thread and forums.

I too have recently had problems with my 2010 118tsi engine, only 43,000kms on the clock. I had a mobile mechanic inspect the vehicle out of panic and he told me about the problems related to these engines, wasn't nice news to hear. However, having read the few recent success stories surronding goodwill repairs, I am curious to know what my chances would be. I am the 2nd owner and have had the car serviced at a european car specialist, on time with invoices. I have a diagnosis with VW booked in on monday and have also been quoted $4000 for a replacement drop in engine from the wreckers/mechanic. I'm ready to fight this with VW, theres is no way a car with such low mileage (let alone a VW) would need an engine replacement! Not good enough.

    Looking forward to some replies!
    Thanks

    118TSI Panic!

Hey guys! New to the thread and the forums.

Glad to see a some recent posts in this thread. My 2010 Golf **** itself around three days ago, engine light and EPC light turned on and was stuck in traffic whilst the car refused to move. Had a mobile mechanic come out and have a look at it and he found that 2 of the 4 cylinders had no compression, something I see is quite common having read this thread. Eventually found out that engine will need replacing, lucky me!

Had a few quotes from a local mechanic of around $4000 to drop another engine in, however have also booked in with VW on monday for a diagnosis. Definiently hoping for a good will repair, also hoping that they dont spring me with a $1,000 fee to 'check it out' even though we all know they have dealt with numerous amounts of these engines with the same bloody problem!

Anyway, given the good luck of late, what do you think my chances of a goodwill repair would be? Car has really low kms only 44,000 on the clock so definiently points to a manufacturers fault, also I'm the second owner. Car has been serviced at a European car specialist also, with regular service history (invoices too).

What do you all think? any response greatly appreciated! So stressed right now, and ready to unleash on VW come monday.

Regards to trade in, I did ask for a price on trade in while I was deciding how to proceed with repairs and I was told that a car in my spec (leather, nav, parking assist) would be valued at around $11K. In the state it was with the repairs required, they offered me $5K. I purchased the car about 4 months ago for $14K (inc. rego transfer) so I too have the dilemma in front of me regarding trade in. I am not too worried about the engine, I think since the repairs unless it fails again in the next 12 months, I should get another 100,000km out of it (hopefully!) but it is the DSG that scares me. For the price, specification, size etc, I cannot find a comparable car though which makes the decision difficult.
I'd put it up for private sale and see how you go. Probably looking around the 10k level. You could easily slip into a Mk6 2.0 TDI golf for that money with a 6 sp DSG. Golf VI's are easy and cheap to upgrade the options after purchase. I did leather, RCD510, bluetooth etc very easily.

Found a CAVD Engine for sale. Not sure of age, if it's whole or in one piece but looks new and cheap. Posted this in the Ebay/Gumtree section as per this link:

Wonder if that dealer will do a good deal for a trade in for you knowing the car's history ... I'd just keep it - at least until the warranty is up on the work they have just done which is probably 12 months (?).

I am betting that's the last time you go to KTAS for what sounds like a lousy job on the service @ dealer prices. Glad this worked out for you !

Great outcome from VW but that issue had nothing to do with Kmart's service - it was just bad timing.

Those 118TSi engines are reknown for blowing holes in pistons due to a design flaw which is why VW replaced it all under warranty.

So I just got my car back yesterday, from VW South Yarra. Almost an entirely new engine.

I have to say, VW really looked after me. A much happier outcome than I'd anticipated. Some would say that the problem shouldn't have occurred in the first place, but that aside, they covered the whole thing under warranty/good will. I'll sing their praises for customer service at least. The car is 6 years old, and had two recalls, so I expressed my disappointment, and I'm not sure if that came into it, but all I had to pay for were a couple of coils, a V belt replacement, and a new headlight, which was gone. They gave me a loan car as soon as one was available.

As for K Mart, they've offered to refund me $100 for the service (which cost $650) and I expect them to pay for the damaged coils. I'm yet to head in there, but after loss of car for a few weeks, and a service which did more damage than good, I'm expecting a full refund.

In the end, the car need all new pistons, rings, and a heap of other parts which I can;t remember. Breakdown is at home, and I'm happy to update if anyone is interested.

They covered the $2,300 tear down diagnosis, and all parts and labour. Parts alone came to $5,000. So I dodged a big bullet.

Looking to trade in now, or in the near future before any more problems emerge. Has this issue vanished from current models? I'm looking at a Golf All Track, or Tiguan. Should I consider diesel?

    Thanks.

Another good news update - on my previous post I mentioned some pipework, I misunderstood. The scope of works includes pistons, all the seals including turbo pipework and exhaust seals. Timing chain and tensioner and various other items. VW have contacted me and have approved 100% contribution to all repairs. Not one cent from my pocket! To say I am chuffed is an understatement! Now the wait to get the car back begins. Might be a couple of weeks.
Looks like this thread is starting to get some GOOD NEWS!!!

If it were mine, I'd put a wrecker motor in it, and sell it.

Once you start pulling down a motor at this stage, you're opening a Pandora's box on what else might need doing while it's apart.

Hi all, just thought I'd add my misfortune to the thread. 2010 Jetta 118 1.4TSI. Bought it from family member last year, regularly serviced at VW, only 79k on the clock. Started running rough in Nov, test revealed issues with the #4 cylinder. Coils and spark plugs change no help. Will cost $1350 to diagnose the problem and VW say could be anywhere from $7-10k to fix. No guarantee but if I'm lucky I might get some money back from VW but will still be up for about $5k (+diagnosis fee).

Alright, firstly, thanks a bunch for feedback so far.

Sounds like the only chance of fault by K Mart is if the intake sucked something in.

Looking at fixing this problem, ball park on cost? And where I should get it done? VW only?

    Other option, I got quoted $4,300 ($3,300 + $1,000) from a wrecker/mechanic to drop in a spare engine. Should I do this and sell>?
