    Letter to VW directors

Would anyone be happy to forward me a letter they sent to VW directors that resulted in a goodwill fix outside of warranty. I've got cracked piston in my 2010 golf that's only done 70000km

After going back and forth with VW for a week they agreed to cover $5000 worth of repairs to my car. The total repair bill was $9700 and my share was $4700, the entire engine is being replaced for the 3rd time. I will have a 2 year unlimited km warranty on parts and labour. I will admit whilst I'm not entirely happy with the outcome the fact that VW stepped up and helped out toward the repair on a 2008 MY09 vehicle that hasn't been serviced by them in 45,000km is impressive. VW Australia arranged for me to have a brand new Jetta off the sales floor to use whilst my car is in for repair and I'll defiantly consider upgrading to one in the next 12-18 months as I'll be offloading my car before the warranty runs out. I'm sure VWA Australia read this forum and I would like to say thank you for helping to repair my car once again.

3 weeks ago I sent an email to a few of the VWA directors as others have discussed already and argued a strong case for why the repair should be covered under warranty. The customer service director replied almost immediately, agreed to cover the diagnosis cost and offered a free loan car; the email wording also suggested the repair would likely be covered. Solitaire were great, diagnosis was done in a couple of days, VW then requested the service history and purchase date. The next day I was offered the full repair or $6500 towards a new VW (as that was the cost of the repair).

I am the second owner, it has done 110000ks, I did not use VW service centres and I missed around 2 services so it was not a perfect situation but obviously this was a defect, nothing I did could have caused the fault and it should have been recalled during the warranty period. Good on VWA for doing that now for some of us. It would be good if VW could say something on here to help people out and rebuild the good-will and brand recognition that I am sure most people on here would have previously associated with VW.

The repair paperwork stated they replaced all pistons, water pump and reprogrammed the ECU to fix a turbo boost delay issue.

    LOL
I didn't think much about Hyundai/Kia's till I met my mrs who has a Veloster. They're not too bad I must admit. All the engineering and design is done out of Germany, plus the 7 year warranty is pretty good ****ing value.
I stand by my mk6 GTI - Best car ever and would not hesitate in recommending one!
If GTI is out of your price range, go the mk6 90TSI in manual - Zero issues with that.

Well played mate. Shame I missed out on this sudden turn of goodwill - if you're reading this VW directors feel free to contact me to reimburse my repair costs. I've already sold the car and moved on, and if anyone asks, I'll recommend a Kia before a VW now (not that I've ever driven one tbh).

    Great outcome mate.
Also, as you noted VGA are VERY active online.
Glad that they have come to the party!

Just a quick note to thank everyone who has shared their advice in this thread.

My 2012 118TSI had the same symptoms as others have described, and low compression in cylinder 4 was identified by an independent mechanic. My car had done 40K, I'm the second owner, and the services we're completed either on time or slightly late (and not all done at VW). I went to the dealer with a lot of information at hand from this thread, ready to plead my case - but before I'd had a chance to even say "it's a known issue" the VW dealership offered to diagnose the issue (at no cost). Once diagnosed they then put in a claim to VWA, and within 24 hours VWA had approved 100% parts and labour.

    Thanks again!

Car was towed to VW, diagnostic report will be made, free of charge if it proves it is a faulty engine. Will repair 100% of the costs. Just picked up my hire car which I will keep until my car is fixed. Great customer service so far. If all of this is successful, I will have faith in the brand again and continue to purchase VWs!
    Well done!

They have arrranged me a loan car to collect tomorrow and I have to admit since they start they have been amazing. I emailed them and they arranged a free tow and diagnosis and VW even arranged with the dealership to carry out all the work and to submit the goodwill claim based on what they find. I know cylinder 4 was the worst of it as that was the one piling up the plug the other 3 were still ok. If you're reading this VWA please fix my car .
That's great news! Can you please tell me, are you the original owner and did you buy/service it at a VW dealership?

I took the approach where i pushed VWA for email confirmation, which they gave me that they would pay for the diagnostic fee before i took my car into the dealer. So from the outset i wanted confirmation that VWA would pay all costs otherwise i wasn't prepared to take it to the dealer not knowing what would happen. Its ridiculous for them to give you no certainty in what could end up being '000's of dollars of repairs. They confirmed via email before i took the car to the dealer that they would diagnosis the problem at VWA cost and put a goodwill claim in and if i wasn't prepared to pay the outcome they would put the car back together again (which cant be done) and I could take my car else where.

Which reading between the lines now I think meant that they were prepared to fix it. I then had certainty that i would not be out of pocket and had some control of my destiny.

I was prepared to keep hassling them until i got confirmation first, i was just lucky that they came to the party after my first initial email to them.

The worst that can happen is they will deny the claim. They'll probably also want a diagnostic fee of around $1k.

Suggest you do some homework first and read up on your statutory warranty rights.
    Thanks, will do.
