What's wrong with driving the DSG in manual mode?

Do you actually use the DSG, or is it always in automatic mode?

Personally, because I love the flexibility it offers, the enjoyment it returns and the techOriginally posted by phantomcamel View PostI hate to say this, but if you have issues with how the DSG responds, torque curve & whatever...why didn't you buy a manual????
Enough said, rant over ... back into my box
It isn't perfect, far from it, but I've stuck with it for reasons mentioned
I've driven manual of all kinds for more than 40 years. I am more than happy to live with the failings of the DSG to be released from the familiarity I have with a clutch pedal
Oh and I have a manual that just happens to also be an auto :p
Haven't we all seen this discussion many times before

I think one thing many people also don't realize that the DSG "learns" your driving style/behavior, so if someone else drives the car it takes a good 15 minutes for the system to learn your drive style. So if your grandma has been driving the car, it will feel weird for some time 'til the system adjusts.

In my opinion you cant compare dsg to traditional manual box, any fool can drive dsg but not everyone can drive a manualOriginally posted by Candyman View PostOh and I have a manual that just happens to also be an auto :p
when i drive my parents car (a5 3.0tdi stage 1) I keep it in S, find manual annoying and D not to exciting and S mode being the most fun

Please don't turn this into that old discussion of which is better. It's off topic, invalid and subjective

You will notice my use of
and
Apart from that, the DSG is all things to all men.

Ah, but making it "unlearn it" is so much fun.Originally posted by phantomcamel View PostI think one thing many people also don't realize that the DSG "learns" your driving style/behavior, so if someone else drives the car it takes a good 15 minutes for the system to learn your drive style. I assume you are being sarcastic about DEMO cars
as the opposite applies in my experience (dealers usually encourage heavy use of the right foot IMO)

Damn straight, no complaints from me, love how smooth it isOriginally posted by phantomcamel View PostIt really comes down to personal preference - I you are a driver who wants to be fully "in charge", listening to the gears/engine and change when it suits YOU - go manual, otherwise enjoy the best AUTO transmission available right now - the DSG gear box!
I am with CM on this one, what R has been driven around the block timidly? the real issue is the car has been driven for short trips at various operating temps constantly.. not good for any carOriginally posted by phantomcamel View PostI think one thing many people also don't realize that the DSG "learns" your driving style/behavior, so if someone else drives the car it takes a good 15 minutes for the system to learn your drive style. My DSG is normally in manual mode, because I don't like the auto's choice of gears - to me, it changes up too early, and routinely selects too high a gear. The few times I've used S mode, it hangs on to each gear too long, well past peak power.
I use auto occasionally, like car parks, and notice a difference in change quality.
Around town, in the traffic light grand prix, with the GTD's combination of high torque and low redline, gear changes are frequent. The DSG gear change is much faster and easier than a traditional manual.
I'm happy with what I've got.

No, it's a huge downfall for all the cars. Constantly adapting to how I drive the car (while I'm constantly adapting to traffic around me) makes for an annoying and sometimes unpredictable experience.Originally posted by phantomcamel View PostI think one thing many people also don't realize that the DSG "learns" your driving style/behavior,

One example is a roundabout on a steep hill near where I live. Sometimes the car doesn't want to go at all because it's shifted up too early/too high, and won't kick down (after responding by giving about 90% throttle, I know about the switch at the end but rarely use that). Other times it holds the gear and revs, and on other times it spins the wheels and flies up. I hope the Mk7 has a constant setting (or 2 or 3 set options to choose from). Sport mode (DSG) is not a solution for metropolitan driving.

Perhaps for you, not having any such issue with the R. The MKV GTI we had was pretty good too. It isn't an instant adaptation - it takes a relatively long time for the mechatronics unit to adjust the take off point and change solenoid values.Originally posted by Ryan_R View PostNo, it's a huge downfall for all the cars. .
Go and get the DSG reset and whilst at the dealer, make sure there isnt a software update for it. Ask them to check for error codes, it may well be you need a new mech unit.
Every car made with an ECU constantly adapts - there for a reason

I've gone to a dealer 2 or 3 times asking them to do that, and each time they make up some excuse for not doing it.

I'm not in Sydney. Burwin VW is supposed to be dealer of the year 3 times in a row, and isn't even my closest one. New dealer opened near by last year but the guys there are not pleasant to deal with at all. When I was looking at VW before purchasing I was at Barloworld at Glen Waverly and the guy there was even worse. I'm a VW fan because of their cars, an perhaps the sales and service guys are too, but sometimes they come across as arrogant, which is a shame. Not sure if anyone else has observed that or not. At least Mark at Burwin is a nice person to deal with.

Whilst he is a Viezu dealer, he may well be able to offer you a solution. I'll be down your way very soon

You could also try a VW specialist, such as your APR dealer? If they have the knowledge and tools to service a DSG, they should be able to reset the DSG for you.Originally posted by Ryan_R View PostI'm not in Sydney...2008 MkV Volkswagen Golf R32 DSG
